Irvine Report

Post by tunaman »

Hadn't seen it mentioned, but saw the small notice in last week's WON stating that it has been confirmed that quagga velgiers had been found in Irvine Lake.

Any progress on a State tracking system/program to allow for cooperation between non-infested bodies of water??? It ain't getting better, and it ain't going away... the longer the matter is prolonged the greater the risk. It has been extremely quiet on this front, from an outward-facing perspective at least, and I'm real curious what, if anything, is being done behind the scenes towards a cohesive and unified solution?

Thanks,
Roger

Roger,

We are working on something for monitoring boat use in the San Diege infected lakes but I doubt the uninfested lakes will accept this. There are to many way to go from an infested water to uninfested without being checked.

In case you haven't notice Hodge is also infected with quagga mussels. This is the first reservoir not connected to the Colorado River system that has been infected.

There is a private concessionaire that has developed a web-based real time tracking system but I don't know if any lakes other than the one they manage will be using it.

Hey Mike

Since hodges has not taking any water in yet from Oliveneheim yet. Im pretty sure it hasnt. This is all opinion of course. Do you think the fact that Hodges is a bird sanctuary contributed to the fact or ballast of bass boats? When was it confirmed that they are in there?

We have been discussing the waterfowl issue with experts on the great lakes and they don't feel that this is much of a threat. Our best GUESS is that they came in by boat, possibly somebody going form an infest lake to Hodges on the same day or next and then draining the bilge with infested water into the lake.

This is why we have been pushing the clean, drain and dry. To bad not all boaters are aware of this issue.

Thanks Mike. I was afraid that the lack of current information indicated paralysis, and sorry to hear that is so. I know you folks are doing what you can, but am disappointed that a more cohesive and comprehensive coalition isn't addressing the more broad issue.

Yes sir... was very familiar with the lakes listed in the Southland, but had read that Irvine was a very recent development, which indicates that the spread continues. There was no mention of the water source for Irvine, or conjecture of how they were introduced.

Sounds like a good opportunity for an enterprising investor, but unless it is widely adopted and supported it won't solve many of the problems.

I'm real curious, and concerned, how this is going to play out with the tournament organizations. Thanks, as always, for your input Mike.

The water for Irvine came from Lake Mathews as I understand the system.

The Department will be requiring all tournament organization to inspect their participants boats to make sure they are cleaned, drained and dry. It will be up to the organizer to DQ anyone that is not in compliance. If a boat fails and they are not DQ'd then the organizations permits may be revoked.
