Rod Guide question???

Post by TEAMDEADMONEY »

What makes the insides of the guides pop out? I have 3 rods that have had the insides of the guides pop out in the last 3 weeks. They are newer high end (Less then 2 years) rods and the inside of the guides werent cracked or chipped. They just popped out. Could it be the heat?? Is there anyway to prevent it?

I have only had this on two rods and my guess was that when placing the rod in the rod locker it was stressing at the eye or banging into an eye in the rod locker. Either way, only way to cleanly fix it is to have the guide replaced.

Again just MHO

It's the rod locker mixed with the heat. Traveling to and from the lake or on plane in rough water will jar it loose, atleast that's what happend to mine. Whenever I notice im missing an insert first place i look is inside my rod locker 90% time they are right there laying on the carpet.

I've replaced lots of guides damaged like that on rods and have come to the conclusion it's usually due to taking them in and out of the rod organizers from our boats rod lockers.

Thats probably it...

Post by TEAMDEADMONEY »

I actually can see it happening because of the rod locker. When I put rods away and I push them down into the pipes I know that the guides often hit. That must be it...

I guess I need to be more careful and not be in such a damn hurry...

Does anybody know id replacing a guide messes with a rod warranty? Or do we need to send them in to the factory? A guide replacement is alot cheaper and quicker then sending them back to Powell, Gloomis or where ever... but not good if it affects the warranties..

Even when not in a hurry it happens from time to time. If it's happening a lot then yeah, slowing down might help. Who does rod repairs down in your neck of the woods? I have it done locally rather then send it off.

i honestly just use my mend it.. You just got to be exteremly careful not to get any glue on the inside of the insert where the line hits. Ive fixed many rods out on the water and they still work to this day. I only replace tips. Ive never lost a fish due to it. super glue and q tips are magical. I use the qtips to check for cracks in the insert before i re use it and to clean up the overage on the glue.

I dont know, with all the warranty stuff going around its probably best to ask the company directly. I have had guides replaced on a few rods cause its cheaper and quicker then warranty issues. But I havnt snapped any of these rods for warranty return (yet)

Pete, I'm not sure what rods are your favorite or even if you are on a Staff, but you really should give the Snake River, Tom Pryor Series rods a look. They all come with the Recoil Guides. If the rods aren't something you want to look at, you might try just the guides. Warning! The guides alone are around $95 a set, but no more little inserts falling out. Just a thought.

I have a few of the GLX's that have these guides or something similar and they don't feel the same at all. They are a way better concept but they feel is totally different in my opinion. I prefer Fuji everyday and twice on Sunday's

Rod socks help cushion the guides when you put them in and out of the locker.

As far as places to take rods for repairs....

Post by TEAMDEADMONEY »

down here...there are a few

...Last Chance bait and Tackle....

Kenny's Rod and Reel... in Upland

Ive taken several Rods to Last Chance and Megan has repaired Eyes and Guides while I wait. They look great when shes done...
She always gets right on it when I go in and they are done in 10-15 minutes....Its Great.

Also I took a rod to Kenny at Kenny's Rod and Reel a couple weeks ago in the afternoon on a Friday. I was getting my rods ready for the Puddingstone event that night and noticed a broken guide on my favorite rod. I went to Kenny's because they are close to where I live and Kenny asked when I needed it by and I told him 4pm   He helped me out by getting it done for me while I waited....so that was very cool of him.

Hey Murph...those rods sound interesting. Is there a website?
I used to be on the Rogue Rod ProStaff but not anymore. Now, I use Powell and Rogue Rods though.

Interesting comments, Ash. I'll forward that link to the rod builder and let him decipher it.

Pete, the website is tompryorrods.com . They are just now getting more involved with the bass fishing world. These "Recoil" guides are supposedly "bullet proof", as far as stepping and kneeling on them, but it sounds like there might be issues as far as braid is concerned. That's what R & D is all about, I guess.

LOL  I know you're kidding me now , Pete. Actually Mel and I haven't fished their Team stuff since they moved all of the events at Lake Powell to the North End. (Bullfrog) Hopefully they'll have another circuit on the South End again, someday and we can jump back in. It's definitely worth fishing, because their AOY prize package is 2nd to none.

Pete

I just had that happen to one of my rods.
I believe it's from taking it out of the rod locker.
I was able to pop it back in. going to try a little super glue on it.

If you guys would buy a Nitro you wouldn't have that problem  In my boat, I dont have to worry about the tubes....I just stack 'em like cord wood :D

I usually keep the two part epoxy in my boat and truck for the repairs that I have to do at night(if I am at a multi-day event) otherwise the super glue works fine
