8ft Crankbait Rod Questions

Post by Alex M. »

I'm looking at getting a bigger more powerful 8ft crankin' stick to handle the bigger hardbaits like DD22s and Lucky Craft CBD20s. My 7ft MH Loomis crankbait rod (amazing ripbait rod btw) is wearing my arm out with the deeper diving baits. Its almost like I'm "fighting" my bait on the retreive.

I'm looking at either the Dobyns 804 or 805. Does anybody own either of these(or both)? What are the pros vs. cons? Like I mentioned I want the rod primarily for the big, deep diving cranks.

I'm also looking at an 8ft Lamiglas "glass" crankbait rod I saw on tacklewarehouse's site. Any input you might have on this rod would be appreciated also...

I don't know which gloomis rod you have but with an 845 or 847 and a shimano reel i can throw DD22's all day.

I know several guys are using the 804cb and 805bc and loving them. i have one ordered myself. but till then i have been using the 704cb and cannot imagine how much the extra foot is going to help with the dd14 and 22's.. casting distance and alot less stress cranking all day...

Hey Alex,I have been using the 804 CB for some time now and love it.Like it was already said, the extra 1ft really lets you sling it a long ways and stay down in the strike zone alot longer.IF you can find one I would say het it,they can be a tough stick to find.GB...Jim

leachman90...
Are you using it with the bigger/deeper running cranks? I use either 10 or 12LB Fluoro. with the big cranks. Any fatigue if so? Do you ever wish that you had maybe got the 805 because its a bit heavier? Just curious...thanks...

greg_fina...
I own the Loomis CBR845 with a Daiwa Alphas-F(Japan model 6.3:1 ratio low pro), spooled up with 12Lb P-Line Halo Fluoro. It just puts ALOT of bend into the rod while throwing the big cranks, and it causes TOO much resistance. Tires out your arm and wrist quite a bit. I don't like that rod for this application personally. Like I said it's an awesome ripbait/topwater stick IMHO.

According to Randy Mcabee in the Basswest article March/April issue 2008 he loves the Dobyns 805cb(8 foot) for the DD22. And this guy knows a thing or two about deep crankbait fishing. He said he matches it up with a Abu Revo STX 6.4:1 and uses 10-12 florocarbon line and goes up to 20lb for fishing around wood(trees). It's hard to find this rod right now. I've been looking everywhere. Like trying to find the Holy Grail. :) D.B.COOPER 8)

Hey Alex,I have never used the 805 so I can only go off of what I have.I also use 10lb even with the DD22s and 1/2 oz Hot Lips.I don't think I really need the heavier rod because there are not many days that I will be throwing the big baits all day.Being on the Columbia with all the current we have it is really important to get down in the strike zone as soon as possible.BUT like DB said they are very hard rods to find right now.GB...Jim

I have a Dobyns 804 and played with a Dobyns 805 for a while....I like the 804...love the 805 ...both are great for DD but after using the 805...804 is very good...the 805 is just better

I think I'm gonna have to go with the 805...I was actually trying to replicate Mcabee's setup, cuz he's the man when it comes to deep crankin...dude is like a modern day David Fritts for sure...Him and his dad didn't win all those boats for nothing...

I think I'll probably pair it up with one of those new Abu "Winch" reels. I mainly a Daiwa guy, but they dont have anything out with a slow enough gear ratio except the new "crazy cranker" Zillion thats coming out...for msrp $300...a bit much for me for a setup that i won't be using almost every outing...So I may have to cross over to the darkside and buy an Abu....Or maybe a Curado with the slow gear ratio possibly???

How do you get custom gears on your Daiwa? Did you take it somewhere or do it yourself?

The Dobyns 805cb is an awesome rod for big cranks. The 804cb for the smaller crankbaits.

FYI Powell has just released 8 new rods in the last week and the one i'm most excited about is the 806 CB. It's designed specifically for deep cranking with magnum plugs. A lot of input from many top pros across the nation was considered in making this rod. This year it seems more than any, deep cranking played a major role in FLW and BASS victorys and/or it was widely publicised. One way or another this is a rod that has been built to meet the high demands of this technique. No doubt, this stick is going to help make even the most novice deep cranker, much improved his or her next time out. Much like swimbaiting, specific tackle is needed to meet the demands of this technique. I'm sure all of the rods mentioned before are all great choices, but you owe it to yourself to try this rod before making your next purchase.

I built the rod you'll see in the following link. I used a medium/heavy action 8-foot popping blank made by Batson Enterprises. I built this specifically for using DD22s at Clear Lake. This rod is the perfect rod for DD22s.

So...
I just picked up a slightly used Dobyns 805($99). Gonna get an Abu winch and some 12Lb. P-Line Halo and see what she's made of. Can't wait to chuck some FlatCB D20's on it.

Mike Tuck....
Where can I get more info on the new Powell rods? Nothing on their site yet....

Thanks...

I could only afford one choice and it was the Dobyns 804 cb. I own only Loomis rods otherwise and am quite happy with this rods performance and am to stupid and poor to know that I'm missing something by not having them both. It's a great rod that's like having a spinning rod welded to a crank stick. In my last tournament my partner was showing me how far his new reel could cast while I routinely put cast after cast from the back seat further than him from the backseat. Outfished him too!

I made the 805CB for the 22 footers. The rod takes most of the work out of it. Some anglers like a little "softer" action and I made the 804CB to cover this. The 805CB has done well for us.

Damiki Craft International will soon have their 7.5 foot, Dark Angel, cranking rod on the market. Very advanced rods at a good price point. You can't go wrong with any of the rods mentioned in this post.
