Blowout Issue?

Post by krpierce »

Didnt want to jack Ash's thread so Ill start my own. I am having the same issue. I have a 175 Merc (EFI) on a Basscat Sabre. I'm running a 24p Trophy. My hole shot is awsome but as soon as I get to 5000-5100 it blows out. I have tried lowering the motor and all I do is lose RPM's and speed. My prop is brand new...should I have it reworked??? Any info would be appreciated...

Going to smaller plugs may correct the issue. Like asked before, is this happening when you are just getting up on pad? When the boat begins to level out.

The blowout occur's after I get onto plane, and trim up. My holeshot is GREAT...but when I hit the 5000-5100 RPM mark or so it blows out (as im trimming the motor up)....I might also try and lower the motor a tad.

I have a Cougar with a 225 Opti and a 26 pitch Trophy. When I bought it, it had 2 of the large diameter PVS plugs, and used to wash the prop a lot. I am now running 4 of the mid-diameter PVS plugs, and it corrected the problem. I still have to let off a bit when I am getting out of the hole, but it's got a great holeshot. The plugs are cheap and worth experimenting with.

The ventilation plugs (PVS) should only affect your hole shot, not your on pad running. You may be trimming the motor too much or have the motor running too high (Jackplate) You probably want to experiment with the PVS plugs to have the motor spin up to 3500-4500 before launching out of the hole (controlled slip). Also what effects are you experiencing at 5000+ when you say it's blowing out? :?:

Put in all your solid plugs. Pull prop and check for junk behind it.

Thanks for the help guys!

Slayer...everything is greatup until the point of said RPM's..as I am trimming the motor to reach WOT it blows out at 5000-5100...I think I should be able to reach wut 5500/5600 (175 Merc EFI)? I am not toooo much into speed but do like to open it up now and then. I will try lowering the motor a little...

K, try running it up to 5000-5800 without trimming it up.... slowly bump the trim up a bit at a time and see where it runs without blowing out. I'm guessing you are getting great lift with your boat, but be careful of bow hooking at WOT (Prop looses bite, nose drops and the boat wants to do a quick 180/360 turn - Hang on) You might also need a bit of cupping in the blades of your prop. Keep us up to date. If you are experiencing too much lift and loss of response in the steering, drop the motor down. Higher motor heights and setback will relieve chine walking to a point, and then things begin to get squirrely in a hurry. Be safe
