What reel is best in YHO?
Can I get some input at which reel you feel is best for deep diving crank baits? I would appreciate any input I can get.. I have been using a 6.2:1 Quantum Code, and would like to step up to a better maybe a bit slower reel for say 3/8 - 5/8 oz DD22 crank baits. I would appreciate any input I can get..

I'm a hard core Daiwa guy...that being said...Calcutta 150 or the 100....I use the 150 and it is by far the best cranking reel I have used...that's my take

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
Shimano Calcutta Conquest 201. It has a slow 5 to 1 gear ratio, functions smooth, big gearing. Extremely well made reel great for cranks and blades.
Re: What reel is best in YHO?
I agree with Buddy Brown. Anything with a 5:1 gear ratio won't wear you out. I use 5:1 gear ratio on the curado 200's. Great reel but I do agree anything with the lower gear ratio will let you crank all day with ease and less fatigue. Once you start using it you'll wonder why in the hell wasn't I doing this 10 years ago.

SHIMANO ALL DAY
If you are going to be deep cranking the ultimate set up ( IMO ) is the GLOOMIS CBR906c matched up with the new Curado 200E5. The new Green color looks sweet and it has a 5.0:1 gear ratio and it is pretty light 7.6 oz's.
If you want to toss shallower running cranks say DD14's and under go with the 903CBRC.
If you want a lighter reel for a fast burning retreive go with the Core 100MG, it has a 6.2:1 and it only weighs 6.1oz's.
Trust me, if you love throwing cranks pick up one of these and you will never buy anything else.

5:1...its a thing of beauty....for a while I was using a shimano made Lew's speed reel, so I'm a low gear deep cranking kinda guy but the any of the ones mentioned will do the job and do it wellSoCalBassAssassin wrote:What's the gear ratio on it?

got mine on a Dobyns 804cb....soon to be a 805cb (804 cb is good for DD but the 805 is much better)

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
Being Oldschool my preference for cranking reels are the round reels with larger diameter spools that retreive about 20" to 22" of line per revolution. Gear ratio's are not that important, it's the reels line capacity and crank handle design that becomes important. You are casting constanly when cranking and if you use a reel that is a third full of line at 35 yards, the spool is too small and narrow IMO. The key is getting the lure down with ease and keeping in control of the retrieve speed during the cast.
One of the best cranking reels is Lew's RB3 reel, cast well, stronge, smooth and inexpensive. Ohterwise the Shimano Calcutta 200 series, 5 to 1, model # depending on your budget.

That Kelly knows his schizzle. New Garcia Revo "Winch" model is the best made today. 5:1, great handle and is super lightweight and cast a country mile. $199.99 retail 11bbg's. Rick G.

What do yo think of the curado 3.8:1 ? Is that too slow?

When deep cranking there is no such thing as too slow.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
The reason I brought up the Curado 3.8:1 is because I located one, but wasn't sure if the ratio was too low. I have notived that 4.7:7 is about the slowesst I have seen on the 2009 reels, but this ia a new 3.8:1 for under $100.00.
Thanks for the input. It is proving very valuable.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
Since the Revo is made in China, with chinese brass gears, you may not get the reliabililty needed in a good cranking reel. You can always send it back to your dealer for repairs. The legacy 4500C was a good cranking reel. Speed is controlled by the angler ounce the lure gets down; 3.8 to 1, 5 to 1, 6.3 to1, don't get too wound up about ratio's. The bait casting reel casts well and winds the lure down easily and smoothly to the depth, then it is a good cranking reel.

There is no too slow when cranking down a bait but there is a too slow once you've hooked a fish and wanna get it in the boat.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
If you're grinding on the bottom, you'll automatically adjust to whatever speed the reel needs to turn to keep the lure bumping at the speed you want it to bump. You won't even think about it.
If you're throwing something that's moving through open water, like a trap, then you'll probably want a faster retrieve that you can crank slower if you want to, instead of a slower retrieve that you have to burn to get a trap moving.
I don't even notice the differences in my reel speeds, until I'm trying to catch up with a fish, or get my lure in quickly for another cast at busting fish.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
The 3.8:1 Curado is painful, you can throw the 5:1 gears in it and you're much better off- you can always slow down the retrieve, but trying to get a bait back to the boat with the 3.8 is a nightmare- great reel, just ditch the 3.8:1 gears and you're in great shape.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
I will definitely look into the Revo before I buy anything..
I have a 7.0:1 Zillion, but it just cranks too fast forme. I have a tendency to crank fast anyway. That is why I am think of a slower cranking reel. On the other hand.. I can definitely relate to wanting to get the fish in the boat asap. It sounds like a 5.1:1 reel would slow my natural speed down enough to bounce a DD over the bottom..

You just may be wishing you had a Shimano when it comes time to use your drag on a Monster fish that decides to pull drag. All the other reels sure are pretty though...........

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
Calcutta 200 TE GT with a deep spool and a Studio Ocean Mark handle....second would be a Daiwa Luna 253.....these two reels are amazing for deep cranks and slow rolling blades!

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
I recommend the shimano 100 6:3 for medium to deep. And for deep 5:1 gear swap in the 100. Obviously that would mean the new E, but not testing it I cant comment.
I have some serious coin on different reels and shimano makes the lightest and best out there. If you are gonna crank all day long you need a light reel. I pair it with a custom rod that gets me out there with a combo less than 10 ounces. It makes cranking a joy instead of a chore.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
Used the Revo "Winch" at Mateos lake in Mexico and got about 40 a day on the crank and it was flawless and the drag was perfect. Biggest was 8 1/2 lbs so I am not sure if it qualifies as big enough. Shimano has lost about 50-60% of its freshwater bass reel market share in the last few years to Garcia and Diawa. The new Curado does look good though. When a huge percentage of BASS Elite pro's, {some getting paid for sure} have made the switch to Revo's, there is something good going on there for sure. The choice of the FLW pro's that we are connected with, that have no reel sponser's seems to be Diawa for spinning and Revo's for all baitcasting applications. Rick G.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
i just hate the brakes on the revo. Whats the point if you have to put on all the brakes? I picked up some cores and threw a good 20 feet farther and with more adjustment left for conditions.
Revos had me brakes all the way set just to not backlash on a 5-10 mph breeze

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
Angler's Marine does'nt carry Shimano anymore, that's why they are pro Diawa. It's all a matter of opinion. I say pick up a few reels at your local shop to see how they feel in your hand. Your hand won't lie to you.

Re: What reel is best in YHO?
The Daiwa TD-Z 100M is one of the best cranking reels I have ever used. Super light at only 180g, 5.7:1 for power, 90MM power handle, with eleven ball bearings. They were replaced with the new Steez and are pretty hard to find, but there are a few for sell in the classified section right now.

All of my BC reels are low profile.. I was going to buy something like the 200-TE for swombaits, but just decided to use a Quantum Energy PT instead. It works GREAT.. But I agree with you on the low profile.. I don't think I would be happy with anything else any more.. The smaller the better for me..
