Alley Cats on my Boat Cover - HELP
Alley Cats on my Boat Cover - HELP
Does anyone have a tried, and true method of keeping the neighbors cats of my boat cover???? Clay
Re: Alley Cats on my Boat Cover - HELP
Historically, this question usually gets answered by everyone's favorite caliber or brand of poison and a mention of an unsuspecting cat flying out of the boat going WOT down the river.

My neighbor puts moth balls under his boat cover - keeps the cats out
A spray with the water hose or vinegar and water will be nasty on em as well!

Thanks Ash. I already have the Mothballs in the splash well. The cats are not getting in my boat, but every morning they are on top of the cover. I need to be very careful and stay within the law, and not abuse someone else's animals. But at the same time, my boat cover is " COVERED" in cat hair....Clay

I have a dog that loves to eat cats i'll rent you. Tie him to the trailer and you wont have a cat problem for long.

Catch then in a live trap and take them to the S.P.C.A. if you dont want to harm them. I wouldnt go through that much trouble if it was me though.

Leave a few crankbaits and ripbaits out there for them to use as play toys.
I would rather jog home from my own Vasectomy than spend Saturday at the mall.

I still say spray the buggers down with Vinegar and water the smell of vinegar is hard on an animals nose and will have the owners wondering whats the deal with my cat smelling like a summers eve?

when I had 19 cats and a problem with em fighting and peeing on my boat cover.
I took a copper wire, strung from bow to stern, connected to extension cord and plugged into 110 volt outlet.
Poof ! No more cat problem !

How many moths do you have to neuter to keep the cats away?

There is a product called Bitter End. It's a spray to keep cats and other animals from chewing, clawing and climbing onto furniture. It's a clear spray so it should be just fine for your cover. The stuff works! This will fix your problem. You can get it at any pet store and most grocery stores.

I would buy all these cats some expensive toys. My wife does that and the cats don't go near them.

Those darn kitties. I use a product that is made for furniture. It is strips of double sided tape, cats HATE sticky surfaces. I can't remember what it is called, got it at pet's mart, it's a little expensive so I started getting it online. I think it was called sticky paws or something like that. I figure a few strips placed in the right areas will keep them away, they last a long time too. Not too sure how they would hold up to the elements though. Good luck. There is always the coffee can full of nails that you can sneak up on and shake it near them, might scare them.

man o man,
be very careful with that bitter stuff! We used it on our stuff in the house when training our dog. it surely works great, the dog wont touch anything that was sprayed with it................ but now neither will we
!
That stuff is an oil and it stays on stuff forever it seems. if you get it on your hands, then wipe your mouth, or eat something with your hands, it gets all over and tastes really bad. i mean real bad!
i freaked out a whole crowd at a fast food joint once, because i got some on my hands just before leaving the house to go eat. i started eating my fries and then just started spitting stuff up, and sticking out my tongue and running to the bathroom!! ........ what a scene! the manager did offer to give us our money back. hehe!

For any troublesome mammal, be it cats, dogs, or raccoons, get a sample of some food they'll really like, such as tuna, salmon, bread - choose according to the species.
Insert into the tasty dish an appropriate dose of hot sauce, such as Tabasco, Dave's Insanity Sauce, or Inner Beauty.
The animal will chow down the meal down in a hurry, and before you know it he'll suddenly be in distress and will run off. Thereafter just for a while sprinkle a few drops of the sauce around the boat, and they'll avoid the smell. Repeat as required.
I had a problem at an old house where we were required by the city to put trash out in plastic bags. Some jerk neighbor was always turning his dogs loose at night, where they roamed getting into trash. I starting putting trash out early in the morning, and the mutts adapted, still getting into the trash and spreading it around. I was considering bad and illegal things, but decided instead to make the dog a nice sandwich - three or four tablespoons of Tabasco between two slices of bread. I put it out at night, right on top of the trash.
That night about 2 am I was awakened by a dog yelping and crying out back. The dog yelped away into the distance getting fainter, but then stopped at a spot yelping and crying steadily. A door then slammed open loudly and a guy started yelling. I guess I not only discouraged the dog, he ran home and woke up his sorry owner.
I had no more scattered trash problems.
I will add I do like animals, and have two fat friendly cats that I spoil rotten. They don't, however, go outside!

Get a Scarecrow motion activated sprinkler. It shoots a three second burst of water when tripped.

Re: Alley Cats on my Boat Cover - HELP
Try some ammonia on the edges first to make sure no problem to your cover.
I use the ammonia to rid the woodpile of snakes and have found some small water bottles of it w/pinholes tossed into the bushes makes the skunks depart immediately. The ammonia is way stronger than vinegar.
A filleted one on the jackstand would also ward off the others---THAT works for coyotes.

Get yourself a Havitrap or any type of live capture. I use this method and take them to animal control for whatever they do with them. I checked with (already knew but..) S.O. and it is legal on your property to trap cats, etc running loose, especially if they are causing damge to any of your property. Takes time to take them to animal control, unless they will come pick them up at your location, but it is legal and will eliminate the problem. Bill K
ps I would rather use a good .17, but that would cause problems.

Buy a Havaheart trap. Catch the cat. To get it to the local pound, (All of this is entirely legal, provided the cat was caught on your property. And I must add, you may not dump a cat or other animal that you have trapped. Your only legal thing to do is take it to the pound, and fill out the papers.)
Ok, to get it to the pound, without 15 nieghbors seeing you cart off a cat trap, buy a big plastic trash can. Cut a neat circle in the top of the lid, so it looks like your aluminum cans container. Haul that cat to the pound. Remove Havaheart from trash can that now has optimal air opening in the lid.
If you feel pangs of guilt, tell the nieghbor,
"I think I might have took your cat to pound today, (Its important to emphasize that the only legal thing to do at this point is...to take it to the pound.) not sure, it looked familiar. You have a couple days to go pick it up.
I did just that, and the nieghbors, never did go after the cat.

Saw a huge fan for cheap today that would blow them off your boat. Hook it up to a motion detector.

Re: Alley Cats on my Boat Cover - HELP
Have you tried to address this with the owners of the cats? They may not realize their animals are causing you problems and may be able to remedy the situation. Hopefully that will be the case. If you can not determine who the owners are, or get no satisfactory response to the damage the cats are causing after talking to the owners, I offer the following:
Live catch trap + cat + garbage can + water hose = problem solved.
Of course there are other ways to handle it but the mentioned process is fairly clean, quiet and quick. It also keeps your boat from stinking like moth balls or vinegar.
I know that solution creates problems for some folks, but I don't think any property owner should have to suffer the consequences of an inconsiderate pet owner's negligent handling of their animals.
I love my pets dearly, and that is why I keep them in the home or on the property.

Get a couple dozen small mouse traps, or a few glue traps if you really want to be mean. Set them all out on the cover. When they snap it usualy wont hurt them but they will find another place to hang out. Glue traps will really mess them up though, (kinda cruel). Even for me and I hate cats.
