Bailey still leads U.S. Open, but race tightens on day two

Post by sTony »

LAS VEGAS—The top four spots remained the same, but race got tighter Tuesday in the 26th U.S. Open on Lake Mead. Shaun Bailey (20.35), John Kerr (18.65), Gary Dobyns (18.61) and Justin Kerr (18.51) remained on top of the leaderboard, but now are separated by just 2.20 pounds in the race for the $150,000 top prize.

No pro competitor cracked the 10-pound mark on the second day, but Dobyns’ 9.56 pounds put pressure on both Bailey and Kerr, while the fourth place Justin Kerr from Simi Valley closed with 9.26 pounds.

Tom Matsunaga of Gardena, Calif. jumped into the top five spots with a 9.40-pound sack, saying, “If you fish slow, they’re there. The bite went from reaction to a worm bite.â€

This one would be tough for me. The top four are great anglers and some are good friends. I think the Bailey has just enough cushion in his lead over the over three that he might be tough to catch. Then again I've learned over the years to never count BDO out, especially when he's in sniffing distance and he wants this one badly. John Kerr is a solid all around angler and an even nicer guy and the onyl one of the three that has won it before. Justin is the only one I've ever drawn in a tournament and he's definitely a solid stick with a fierce competitive side.

Rooting for just one, well for me, that's not possible. Right now it's Shaun's tournament to win or lose. You can bet these guys are all going to make it real interesting.

Yes, Aaron blanked on Day 2. He just didn't have a good tournament, but was in great spirits last night. It was tough as nails out there... he vowed to be back every time he can, and I'm sure he'll get #3 one of these years.

Just a great race going into the last day. Congrats to Justin.

You think Gary is ready to have the Kerr's (no relation between John and Justin) stay home for a change.

John has proven he is a stud on Mead especially during the Open.

Way to go guys. Gary will get it eventually.
