Shimano Core making squealing noise
Hi everyone,
I just bought 4 Shimano Cores and took a couple out just a week ago to break them in.
Overall I love them, they cast far and are super smooth. However, when retrieving my line, what I noticed that there was a lot of squealing coming from it. At first I thought it was my rod tip making all the noise (as if it was tangled up), but when I listened closer, it was coming from the reels' line guide. Is this normal? I've had chronarchs and curados in the past and they never made this noise.
Is the line guide on these reels made out of Titanium, which is possibly causing this squealing noise when it comes in contact with the line? It happens 8 out of 10 times when I'm retrieving the line and after a days of fishing it gets quite annoying.
I thought it was only one reel but after using all 4 reels they all make the same noise. It know it isn't the rod or line because all 4 of my rods are different and I've had these rods with other shimano reels and I'm using same monofilment line that I've always used.
Please help me out. This annoyance makes me wonder if I made a mistake investing in these reels and maybe should have stuck with the chronarchs.
Anybody else have this issue? Or is it just my cores?
Thanks!!

Re: Shimano Core making squealing noise
I have never heard this complaint before. I know my multiple Core's do not have this problem. The line guide is similar to what we use in the Calais 100A and Calais DC. I can't see a squealing noise coming from the line guide. The opening is larger and conical shaped so the line should make as much contact as the Chronarch.
I guess you can send them in and we can make some casts and try to duplicate the complaint.

Re: Shimano Core making squealing noise
thanks for the reply. Now I'm completely puzzled. Is the guide made from titanium? A buddy of mine has a loomis rod with Ti guides and when he reels in his wet line if there is any excessive contact with the guides it makes the same type of noise.
I'm beginning to wonder if it's my line that the guide doesn't like.
If this was happening to one reel I can see apossible defect, but all 4 of my cores, it would be kind of hard to believe.

Re: Shimano Core making squealing noise
The insert is Titanium on the line guide.
Some lines can make noise going through the guides. I have a Loomis rod that uses Recoil guides and when I use Fluoro it squeals a little bit. The Cumara rods that I use have Fuji SiC guides. They are silent.

OK, then suspect it is the line not getting along with reels Ti line guide.
If you don't mine me asking, what line do you use for your Cores?
Been thinking about switch lines for a while... I've been using (don't laugh) Stren Lo-vis for years, people make fun of it but it works for me and I can see my line easily when fishing senkos...
BTW thanks for all the responses!

I use pretty much all Sunline or Seaguar FC. I have no issues with this line.

Re: Shimano Core making squealing noise
take out the spool and run a q tip or something in the opening. There is prolly extra oil. THen back the friction all the way off then tighten the keeper wheel down.
Thats what Jeremy told me at ICAST and it solved my squealing.

Re: Shimano Core making squealing noise
Bantam1, are you sure the actual insert is Ti or is it Ti oxide? Titanium is relatively soft, especially when compared silicon carbide or aluminum oxide.
Re: Shimano Core making squealing noise
I think its Ti coated and not 100% Ti. I would have to wait until Jeremy comes back from a work trip to ask him.

Re: Shimano Core making squealing noise
Thanks for the tip! I'll give this a try first, but honestly I think my line is the problem.
A friend who also uses the same line on his cores, switched to a different brand of mono this week and the squealing noise magically stopped.
Anys I'll give what you suggested and if that fails, then respooling it is.
Thanks again!
