What specifically do you want to know? I'm a former purist flyfisherman who bought a boat to flyfish for stripers in the Delta and within four years completely converted to bass fishing hardcore. It is fun and can be very effective with 6 to 8 wt rods and floating and sinking lines. Foam poppers and hairbugs on top are a kick and streamers like Deceivers and Clousers and big woolybuggers work great. If you're looking for lots of technical info I could go on and on but there are some other sources that you could get alot of info on. Dan Blanton has a board where you could post questions and get alot of answers. Kienes fly shop in Sacramento has a message board with a section soley for warm water species. Actually if you go into any flyshop you will get alot of help. There's a guy named Kevin Doran who guides flyfishermen on the Delta for stripers and he is really known as a top water guru when it comes to flyfishing. He has a website but I cant remember it. Give it a try! Mike

Blanton's website is www.danblanton.com
Doran's site is www.deltaadventures.com
Kienes site is www.kiene.com
My favorite shop if you are near Modesto is Sierra Anglers FS run by a great guy named Bob Nakagawa. He can definitely help you out if you want to pursue it. Have fun.

DAN thanks for the plug brotha!

....actually it's not gay?
Don't get me wrong, there's always an MBR844 with 65lb Power Pro on board! But if we can get it done on the Fly, it's ALL GOOD!
In the last couple years the explosion of the bass on the fly trend hit the Delta, there was even a Fly only Tourney!
http://www.Bassnfly.com

Not only are we getting them on topwater most of the day but subsurface using jig type flies and shad patterns!

Anyway.....it's not gay!

Maybe you're just a little insecure?

And sometimes we even get a few stripers on the FLY? That's Really Gay!!!

I don’t know this Mike guy but I hope he is just kidding! Pretty bold statement to a thread started by someone he doesn’t even know. I am on here looking for solid information but didn’t know there were children with sexual hang-ups on this board... lame.

I am not a purist or a gay.... I just look for ways to make fishing different and challenging.

Would you say this stuff to me in person... I dont think so... but behind the computer you are real toughguy.

First bass I ever caught was on a fly rod when I first moved from WA when I was a kid. It smoked the bluegill I hooked on a caddis fly. A long time ago, still dont know who caught who..

There are a bunch of guys now fly fishing for blacks and stripers on the Delta. I see a bunch out there almost every time I go out.

I certainly don't see what's gay about that at all. That's pretty offensive and totally uncalled for if you ask me.

These Fly Guys are catching a lot of bass when I can't so I tend to talk with 'em when I can to learn a little and they seem like a great group of guys. Haven't seen any ladies out there yet but anyway we can grow the sport, regardless of technique or approach ought to be welcomed to my mind.

Somewhere in the photo section here is the 18+ Delta Largemouth that I lipped for my buddy Joe Shelby a few years back. Caught on a flyrod. As far as the gay blast, it's uncalled for. There seems to still be a few people on this board who think they can say just about anything they want. Try those other sites and you won't have to listen to that kinda crap. Mike Thompson, Angler

I learned from some younguns that the new meaning of "Gay", in this context, means "Dumb", and is without sexual connotation and meant as a joke. But that will take time to filter up to us old farts who just like to fish and live in the dark.

I get uptight because it's stuff like this that makes people not want to post.

Usually when someone is kidding they indicate it somehow by using the emoticons on the site such as  or :D or  or whatever.

As a user of the site I'd like to hear from anyone fishing for bass regardless of style or approach. Heck it'd be great to hear from guys that fish from shore or kick boats or pontoons or whatever means they use to pursue bass.

THAT'S all we're trying to say :)

I still keep a fly rod or 2 in my rod lockers. Its really just another technique for me. I usually use it to basically skip fly's or leaches way back in under cut banks and black berry bushes. I can hang 20 yards off the bank and skip stuff in really tight, work the bait a few feet then roll it out and flip it back in really fast. Think of it as long range flipping. Works really well in current when you cant hold the boat or clear water so you dont spook fish. One of the best days fishing I have ever had was doing this on the feather for small mouth. 40 plus fish to 6#. There is a time and place for just about every style of fishing. And hooking a 3 to 6 pound small mouth on a 6lb leader and 5 weight rod might be the best fight you will ever get.

I'm not sure what I'm doing anymore to be honest with you. I do have it up for sale. Not sure if I can afford to get back into one if I do sell it. The economy being what it is I'm trying to sell the boat, my RV, and if an acceptable offer came along, maybe even the suite of sites.

I still absolutely love to fish. But my kids are growing up fast and it's hard to keep up with their activities and do mine as well. If I could get them to jump in the boat with me it would make a huge difference in keeping it around and paying it off. But with them not excited at all about fishing, it kind of makes me feel a bit selfish to spend so much money on something that only I get satisfaction from.

look up info/ books on a man named dave whitlock. he's the master bass fly fisher. i still do occasionaly 8 wt rod w/ weight forward line.
you will be able to throw and kind of bass fly and it will hold up on stripers and salmon too.
look at on line for "the fly shop" in redding. very helpful and good selection of bass flies. ken hanley has some good stuff too.
tight lines and duck as you chuck

I flyFish the Delta with my partner 3,4 times a week.

Striper, catfish, bluegill, bream, and black bass, carp...and sqawfish
all eat flies. We love it..the wind is the biggest factor.....

Its a Lifestyle we enjoy ...we do fish
tournaments and conventional gear....

Dont limit yourself, life is to short.
