the problem I had was the vibration of the motor sheared the compressor mounting bolts (twice  ).... the same thing also happened with the alternator bolts once too

The second time, the broken compressor bolts caused soo much damage to the mounting surface that the power head had to be replaced.... my motor was out of warranty at that time and Mercury agreed it was a manufacturing defect and provided the power head at no charge,,, I still had to pay about $1500 for the labor.......

along with a long, long, long list of other mechanical problems  ....... the performance and fuel economy of Opti's is great...... too bad reliabilty lags sooo far behind... without a doubt, the most problematic gas motor of any type I have ever owned.

check previous posts, Joe Bruce and Rich Thiel (many others I'm sure) have had the same compressor problems...

I have a 200 optimax with close to 180 hours on it and I have not had a single problem with it. ( Knocks on wood )

I blew a compressor up at Clear Lake right before the Rally. Not sure why but I believe they know they have some problems with their compressors. Mine blew apart and only little pieces were left. Good news is I was still under warranty and got fixed up right away.

The compressor is a weak link in the mercs. It cost me and G. Hines dearly a few years back at the FLW on Mead. I was in 11 place after the 1st day. I drew G. Hines and had a limit about 8 #
( I think on the non boaters side there were only 4 limits weighed on the second day ) On the way back to weigh-in he blew his compressor. The rescue boat found us drifting 2 hours after the weigh in was over and almost completely dark. MAJOR BUMMER

they didnt pay for mine. I went and bought the strongest bolts I could get. welded the top two mounts back in place and added a
1\8" thick peice of stainless via three sm bolts and epoxy to the top of the mount area. just getting it back together after it cut loose at hbc2.

hope it holds.
