Recessed Trolling Motor Pedal?

Post by L.Mickelson »

I'm looking for opinions on whether you guys are pro or con for having a recessed well for the foot pedal? I'm thinking about installing a ComfortTroll. Thanks.

recessed is great if you are a taller guy. The only down side is if you spear a wave your foot control sits in water and drains pretty slow.

you'll likely get 50/50 responses, as some guys really love them and others dont.

Personally for me, i dont like 'em because of the extreme angles it makes on my foot and trying to balance. Pushing the pedal forward is easy, but tilting backwards is very hard for me when the pedal is recessed. i cant get balanced in that position.

Best bet is to get on a boat that has one and try it out for a bit, even if its just putzing around in the marina after a day of fishing.
The feel is very different and you need to try it out before cutting your boat up and installing one.

Good Luck,

I put one in my Tracker, and my back spasms went away. I used to have them all the way home.
I blocked it up about 1 1/2" (thank you Ron C.) so the pedal itself was just above flush with the deck.
My Ranger came with a recessed pedal, and the height is perfect.
If it hadn't, I would have asked Jordan to put one in.
To me, it's a necessity, not an option.
And I've take waves from wake boarders in Slalom that filled the well, and the well drained fine. I wouldn't want to do it on regular basis, but I had no problems with the TM after the water level dropped, about 15 seconds.
If it seems slow to you, just enlarge the drain hole, and put in a bigger flange with silicone and a larger drain tube. Or put in overflow holes in the sides 1" above the bottom, so, if you get swamped, it will drain more quickly. Just make sure the holes don't face something that shouldn't get wet, like electrical connections or dry storage. and space them far enough apart that they don't weaken the unit.
If you spear a wave, and all you have to worry about is water in the recessed pedal well, you're lucky.

I've got a fused left ankle and was skeptical of the recessed pedal. Turns out I can balance without the seat and use either foot, which I couldn't do before. Some fatigue there after a 12 hour day. Rougher conditions I use the seat pedestal. Never took a big one over the bow yet, but suggestions to open drain holes seems sound.

I cut in Phillips fishing products recess foot pedal in my boat. Love it way better balance in the wind because your foot sits at the heighth of your deck i can kneel operate my trolling motor and retie my line. also because of the way you stand it helps your back and balance. next best thing since sliced bread. wouldn't own another boat without it or a hot foot

I have tried both and doesn't matter for me, I still fall over every few minutes! :)
