18 4 at Corona lake????

Post by BTB »

I just got this report from a news service for Corona Lake:

"Lake record largemouth bass toppled
again at Corona Lake with 18 1/4-pounder

Randy Muirhead of Glen Ivy broke his own lake record for largemouth bass at Corona Lake by catching an 18 1/4-pounder this past Thursday evening while fishing a crawdad-colored crankbait from his pontoon float tube. The fish breaks the lake record of 17-pounds, 10-ounces that Muirhead caught a month ago.. . . . . . .
Note to Editors: We'll forward a photo of the new lake record Corona Lake bass as soon as we get it."

Next HBC at Corona Lake?? LOL   :?:

I don't know if this is verifiable but they said pictures are coming. The 17 10 looked big and healthy in the pic but I don't know.

Someone please call Snopes - inquiring minds want to know.

It was in this week's WON also. Someone caught a 17-1 just a week or so ago, and said he caught several other big ones including a pair of 12's.

Not much bass-fishing pressure, so I'm sure it is a good fishery at the right time.

Anybody weigh the fish? The first one didn't look like a 17? I could be wrong, obviously...

just looking at the size of the guys fingers and the lack of a basketball belly- looks like a nice fish held out at arms length, of course I've never caught one close to 17-10, but I've caught some that look like the one in the picture, and now an 18+?? curious I guess...

Image (fixed it for ya :D )
when upper teen fish like that start jumping on cranks like they are going out of style, with lots of extra double digits as well, something crazy is going on- aka Castaic in 1991 or something :)

Does not suprise me w/ all the trout they dump in that place as well as the lack of bass fisherman that fish. I imagine that Irvine has a few giants in there as well. It is suprising that he caught those two fish so close together though.

I agree Chris. The 13-2 my dad has on his wall he got out of Vail looks bigger than this. Its a great fish no matter what it weighs. I wonder if the fish was weighed on a personal scale or a certified scale. Anyone know? Looks like i need to make some laps around that place with the swimbait.

Since I was a little grom reading WON and then getting spanked at Irvine when 8 million pounds of trout were stocked every 5 minutes, I've been a little skeptical of the "marketing" the pay to fish lakes do... call me a cynic :D

Look at the 10-4 a guy caught at the FLW today at the Delta, same pose, that fish looks even bigger- not trying to knock the guy (Lunker Tooth Murphy) that caught a very nice fish, and also got attacked by a bunch of other huge bass while tubing, just wondering about the incredible stats flying out of Corona aka "The El Salto of the 909" all of a sudden...

As a general rule in regards to Florida strain LMB or F* intergrades, the girth is usually about 90% of the length when giants get over the 15 lb mark. 17+ lbs., the bass should be about 27 to 28 inches long with a girth of 24 to 25 inches. The bass in the photo looks to be a 80% girth bass 21 to 22 inch, if the bass was 27 inches long, that would equal 13+ bass (L X L X G / 1200 = weight in lbs.) and that is what the bass in the photo looks like to me.
I am not trying to down play the catch, length and girth measurement don't lie, however we only have a photo and no way to varify the weight.

The accepted formula of taping any fish to determine weight is: Girth squared x length divied by 800 = weight. So IF the fish has a 22 inch girth and is 27 inches long the weight would be calculated as follows:

22 x 22 = 484 x 27 = 13,068 dived by 800 = 16.335 pounds.

So assuming your guess at girth and length is accurate this fish reported to be 17-3 would weigh 16-4. Not too far off. I was surprised when I applied the formula, as the fish does not look that heavy.

As you note, we do not have any measurements so all of this is a guess. I still haven't heard if the fish was weighed on the lake scales or not. I am waiting on a picture of the 18-4 or some more information.

IGFA weight formula for tuna and marlin doesn't work for bass.
I have somw expierence with measuring over 100 of my own 10+ LMB and a dozen between 16 to 19 lbs and have a good idea of what a 17+ looks like having caught 3 of them.

No offense intended.

I wasn't trying to disrespect.

I enjoy the exchange of information and I am just as curious about the weight of these fish as anyone else.

I have used the formula on a lot of different fish and it works pretty good on all of them, but a scale would be best.

No problem, the IGFA formula has been mis used for LMB by a lot of folks for a long time.
It is possible that Corona lake could produce giant bass, it has everything need, stocked trout and low fishing pressure, up until now.
