Prop Questions...
Prop Questions...
I have an '06 Optimax, and yesterday running across Pedro I randomly lost a blade, it just broke off. The prop is a Tempest Plus 23 Pitch. I plan on staying with a 23 pitch, but do i need to get another Tempest Plus? Is there a better deal on another prop out there? I obviously know nothing about props so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Prop Questions...
Call up C&C marine and see if they have any spare props in there shop that you can try out. See what they suggest too. Great group of guys.

Re: Prop Questions...
There are a lot of experienced folks that can help you out here.
Phils Prop Shop in Redding is quite useful. Chris is the guy that does the prop stuff and he knows his stuff. 530 462 4939. Give
IMO....there are substitutes but your likely to get the best overall performance out of a tempest/fury meaning you'll probably end up replacing it with a similar.
chucking a blade is a bad thing I guess, although I have not experienced it......yet. As some earlier posts have indicated, it can be a quite dangerous.
As for getting a used prop, be careful. Lots of them are worked over a bit and may have stress fractures. I personally recommend a new prop.
Good luck,
Paul

Guys I'll say it again, flinging a blade isnt the worst thing. It will vibrate the heck out of you but it shouldnt hook ya.
What motor, boat and rpm are you running at WOT? and whats your water pressure? Also if you have a GPS speed that would be helpful. Im guessing you have 1.62 gears but if you dont let me know that too.

I'm just curious - why is it we're hearing about this so much lately? I don't ever remember hearing about throwing blades previously(maybe I just wasn't paying attention, or it just wasn't posted), but it seems that there are several recent reports of just that and I'd like to know why? Is there something that folks are doing that shouldn't be done, or is it just happenstance? I'd like to avoid it myself, if it can be prevented.

Re: Prop Questions...
It happened to me also and was able to have it replaced under warranty.
Re: Prop Questions...
I believe Phils can fix it for you. They have a great turn around. I sent my prop up there on a thursday a couple of weeks ago and got it back on the follwing monday. Just like new!

Thanks for the helps guys
Re: Prop Questions...
Thanks Mark, but I didn't mean historically, rather over the last couple of years. I've been a member here for a while, but don't remember seeing any/much discussion of this in that time? It definitely piques my curiosity.

Re: Prop Questions...
The Tempest is a good prop--I just bought a Tempest Plus myself. I hope my blade does not fall off. I warrantee the prop because loosing a blade should not happen under normal usage. I suspect micro fractures due to a bad casting.
