Crankbaits that DON'T need tuning.....

Post by captainkirk »

Fellas.....please enlighten me...

Is there a crankbait out there that DOES NOT NEED TUNING OUT OF THE BOX? I wish I could fish these baits more but it frustrates the heck out of me when I can't get the darn things to run straight. I've tried all the known ways to tune em'...tweaking the ring eye, adding weight, yada, yada, yada....

These days, I have a feeling you have to spend $25 on one bait in order to get one that runs correctly....lookin' forward to some feedback.

Captain, I've had pretty good luck with Rapala and Normans. Name a few that you have tried and what pound testline you're using.

Really? Normans haven't been good for me at all....Rapalas are 50/50. I've have the best luck with Luhr Jensen's Speed Traps....but we all know you can't throw the same thing all the time

I throw all my cranks on 10# test mono or co-polymer.

I have had pretty good luck with the Normans also.

As far as tunning is concerned, it's not just the line tie that might need to be tweeked. it could be the the hook hangers or connection. They might be out of alignment and you straighten them just like you tweek the line tie.

Normans and luckycraft are always good right out of the box. If they don't run true take em back.

I do not know any crank baits you do not have to tune. You are lucky to get 1 out of the box that runs true.I tune my crankbaits all day long because if you are useing them right you are banging rocks,trees,concrete,etc.etc.etc.I do not send my cranks back if they don't run right first time out of the box.I tune them at the split ring holder and I very rarely have to tune the hooks. The only time I mess with the hooks is to change them out to either smaller or larger depends on the bait. Also when you are useing different pound test line each time you should do a little fine tuneing on the bait.I have on a very rare occasion had to move the hooks a slight bit but very rarely.
If you see me on the water at Irvine you will see me messing with a crank or 2 before the tournament just to get them fine tuned,I do it before a lot of tournaments while waiting to take off.

It has been my experience that…

…Rapalas, Bombers (including Fat Free Shad), Lucky Crafts, and Luhr-Jensens are crankbaits that rarely need tuning. The absolute worst are Poes, however, when tuned properly, they are among the very best crankbaits out there.

In all honesty, I do “somethingâ€

so when you guys say "tune" and are talking about the split ring connection and hook connection, are you turning these things or bending them....if you do, you do it in the direction the bait is running towards, correct?

Meaning, if the bait is coming at you and running to your left, you turn or bend the ring eye to the left or right?

You always bend it...

...in the direction that you want it to run. If the bait is running to the left, you bend it (ever so slightly) to the right.
