SO.....GET THIS...

Post by Alex M. »

I was up at Clear Lake last week for the ABA TOC(we had a great pre-fish and horrible tourney like many others...blah...blah....blah). After a lackluster 2nd day on Sat., we decided to not even weigh in our small bag, call it a day, and go and rest so we could do some night fishing as we heard the night bite was ON!

At about 7 or 8pm(pitch black), we head over to Henderson from where were staying(Ferndale). I get the boat on pad and maintain a speed of about 30mph or so, make the short drive over to Henderson while following my GPS trails. I've got the running lights on as well. Everything is all good at this point. We arrive at Henderson, I get off pad a long ways of from the rocks, and put the trolling motor in the water to make a stealth entry. I make my first cast, and just at that moment I make out the silhouette of what appears to be a boat...WITH NO LIGHTS! All of the sudden I hear an outboard start up and the silhouette gets closer. Then it starts.....BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!!! This lunatic is some obviously mentally disturbed nutcase, who is beating the side of his aluminum clunker with a huge wrench...BANG BANG BANG BANG!!! I mean LOUD. He starts doing laps up and down the face of the rock wall at Henderson. Me and my buddy were pretty much like WTF?? At this point still no lights on his boat. BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG..

He idles by us and goes, "You think that will spook the fish?". He had the same voice as The Penguin from the old Batman tv shows though. Qwwaaaa...Qwwwwwaaaccckkk. He continues idleing up and down the face for several more minutes....BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG...Pounding the side of his boat with the wrench. He finally stops and idles by us and says, "That should f-up the bite for a good 20-30 mins....See you then". WTF?????? My buddy had laid out some 80Lb braid which the jacka$$ ran over with his prop as my buddy free-spooled for a while, as he began to leave the area....STILL WITHOUT RUNNING LIGHTS!!!

We sat there scratching our heads for a moment wondering what had just transpired?

Funny thing was that were already several boats fishing the area that evening before we got there, and they all said that the dude was a few bagels short of a barmitzvah too. Apparently he was talking s#!t to them also.

I ended up sticking a 6Lber about 10-15 mins later. The guy never returned.....

Anyone know of this wack-job or have this happen to them?
Any similar stories?.....Or other psychotic fisherman stories?
Please share....

Cheers...

Nope, never saw anything like that at night anywhere on the lake and I fished a lot of places at night. I carry some powerful lights. If I ever see him I'll make sure i can identify him in a line up and get his CF numbers. Doesn't take long for Clear Lake fish to settle down. They've seen it all.

F#$% That. Anyone with balls like that is looking for trouble. Its just fishing. Leave a guy like that to his own demise and make sure you come home alive.

Or run him over with your boat and say you didn't see him!

Earlier this year my brother was fishing a lake in Texas (Pat Cleburne) and he was working his way up to the dam area to fish some off-shore structure. When he got there he found two other boats on the same area. One of the boats had a ealry 40's and a early 20's guy in it, the other boat was an older couple late 50's or so. Well the two guys were pulling in a fish every other cast and were telling the older couple how just a few days earlier they had dropped a brush pile right were they were catching the fish. Well after about ten minutes, the two guys left, the older couple moved in on this new brush pile to try there luck. My brother was fishing some other structure just watching all this unfold. After about ten or 15 min the other boat with the two guys in it came back, and when they saw the older couple on "their spot" they started loosing there minds. They were yelling at this older couple calling her a C*&t and variouse other profanities as well as the man. They were taking there boat running right at them at full speed and turning at the last second and spraying the whole boat with water as well as the wakes over the nose. My brother told me he was getting ready to call the sheriffs office when the younger guys left. I have encountered a few "hey thats my spot" fisherman in my day but nothing to this extreme. Unfortunatly I agree with Slippy and that anytime you are night fishing to need to be able to deffend your self. But in alot of cases a silver tongue is just as powerfull as a bullet.

Alex, I agree that the guy was probably a half bubble off plumb, but one thing to keep in mind... If you run on pad at night and run over somebody you are going to go to jail. Just keep that in mind when you get the urge to get up and go at night. :?

Apparently unless you happen to be a member of the local policing authority up there in Lake County. Then you can run people down in your boat and the victim becomes the guilty party.

I remember the thread about that sTony, I also remember asking if it was even legal to run at those speeds at night. I was always under the impression that it was 5mph after dark. What is the actual law about speed at night?

I know what you're saying, but I maintained, what was in my opinion a "safe speed", had my running lights on(Just as EVERYONE should at night...if they had ANY common sense), and was following my GPS trail from earlier to travel a short distance. I'm by no means a local on CL, but have spent enough days on the water there to have an excellent grasp of locations and hazards. I feel I was completely responsible AND safe. I'm not into showing off or rooster-tailing, I'm all about getting from point "A" to point "B" in the safest and most efficient manner possible.

Darn you, you beat me to it. I was fishing with my buddy up there the other night and there was a fisherman just blasting ole Hank William as he drifted along fishing. Coulda been the same guy.

Been fishing Clear Lake for 18 years day and night and never had anything like that happen. Talk about letting bad fishing get to you!! Anyone that would do such a thing is for sure not the sharpest tool in the shed or to quote George Clooney from Oh Brother Where Art Thou "Dummer than a bag of hammers" Back when I was 20 I would have waked him with my boat and yes that could have hurt some one, I was not the smartest tool in the shed back than:) The reason you know he was either nuts or not smart is because if you are in an aluminum boat and you do that to a full size bass boat and that guy had an attitude you are getting a swim bait chucked at you or even run down, I am not saying I would do that but I guaranty that there are guys out there that would have not put up with that. You guys did the right thing.

Hey I have a question to make it interesting, what if he did all that and than tried to board your boat?

We had some crazy do laps around us for 30 min. down in Rattlesnake this summer while night fishing. Then just followed us all night. Carry a weapon out there people. Its not the safest place to have an encounter like this. One shot from the other side and knowbody knows what happened. its a mystery when its pitch black out. The crazy's come out at night and just look for trouble. wouldnt leave us alone for at least an hour and at thirty mph at night he just followed us. He wanted us to say something but we never said a word. Kept it quiet and went to the ramp to pull out. He left after we pulled out. Not the same people in So cal up north. Way more crack heads to contend with up here and its just getting worse. I dont like it at all and hope to leave after this season. Wierdos up here like ive never seen before. WOW is all i can say!

Dave I think trying to board your boat under maritime laws without permission is considered an act of piracy...Could be wrong but without permission you have every right to deffend yourself.

at that point , I would have to defend.
anything else you can pull away and leave, if someone starts boarding your boat, one you've let him get too close. 2 if he does it and gets away with it he'll do it again, maybe with someone less able to defend than you.

Yeah Paul has it right....
There are way more tweekers and up there than in most parts of SoCal...I was at the Wal-Mart(Lower Lake) getting something, talk about a f-ing freak show. You needed 5 people to make a full head of teeth...gross. The area around ferndale/soda bay/buckingham is alright imho. I don't blame Paul for wanting to break the hell outta there, coming from SoCal and all...whole nother world...

If he would have tried to board my Skeeter...Let's just say hwe would have got hurt pretty bad....At that point its a matter of self defense...Ya gotta do what you gotta do...

Side Note:
I forgot to mention that he had this disco ball looking thing with purple LEDs on it right before he left the spot...Keep an eye out. Aluminum boat, maybe green trim...crappy oldschool 25-50hp maybe Johnson/Evinrude...Pretty sure he had glasses on...Oh yeah...And he loves not using his lights @ night...cuz thats how he rolls...

I used to shore fish in Lakeport around Library Park and had some scary moments at night. Lots of homeless cruisers and drunks/drug addicts. But the Lakeport City Council took care of that problem.

They don't allow fishing in the park anymore.

You know what is crazy is I have been fishing there for 18 years and yes I have seen some tweekers but never had anyone mess with me or my stuff, I even toss an anchor and sleep on my boat once in a while but it could be because I grew up in a bad neighborhood and have that don't mess with me look on my face all the time or it could be because I am 6"1 and 210 lbs? I don't think its my size because tweeker don't care about size, they just care about the next line or shot. I guess I have been lucky, I love fishing there and I hope the tweekers leave me and my stuff alone, I don't want to have to toss a swim bait with 50 lb braid or worse!!

P.S. My buddy Kameron who just posted on the Clear Lake reports page said someone ripped him off for $700.00 worth of rods and reels.

Watch your stuff!!!

David, find some wood immediately on knock on it. I swear by it.

No-one messes with me either, I just take out my partial where I lost three front teeth in my accident in 1971 and I look worse off than they do ;-)

Well if Lake County would refuse to keep taking people on parole to get the money from the State, you'd have a few less "characters". It is a shame because it's such a beautiful area!! Good luck, and keep outta the way of Deputies driving their boats at night too!! 8)

That seems to be a trend in NorCal. Alot of the "nicer" areas have plenty of goons and tweekers because they are still in the boonies, regardless of the beauty of the terrain. Look at the town of Oroville for example....Alot of parolees there too...and you might just get loaded from all the meth fumes walking down the street there....gross really.

Appears Lake Co (Clear lake patrol members) are exempt from injuring anyone and when they do it the the victims fault, for getting in their way. Talk about (Not good old boys policy) but dumb *** policy. Bill K

Cmon sTony.... :D
I don't know of anyone who thinks those are "nicer" areas...not by a longshot. Compton? LOL....You crack me up....Yeah there's some crazy tweeker desert folk out here...But lake tweekers are kinda a different breed...You guys have your fair share of high speed chases too...Just not as glamorized as our "Late Breaking News" stories...LOL

Oh...And let's not forgot Stockton/Modesto/Bay Area as far as automotive crimes(theft) go..They are consistently on the nationwide top 10 list: http://www.motorauthority.com/californi ... pital.html . I live in LA(proper)...In the city. I don't think twice about parking my brand new Tundra on the street outside my house, it's mellow like that. Not to say that nothing will ever/could ever happen, but there's a lower probability. I'd be a bit more stressed if I left my truck on the street in Stockton/Modesto/Bay Area....

I'm just sayin'...

Let's face it, the whole State has problems, and they'll grow worse as Mexico's out-of-control gang wars and kidnappings spread. There's probably great areas and **** areas in every county. I do believe I get to see more cool "gangsta" grills, low-riders, and high-dollar pimps and ho's than Greg does at Clearlake though, but he does get more trees(lots of dead ones around Soda bay- fumes from volcanoes? Bugs?), muskrats, otters, deer, cold weather, water, and mullets(not the fish). Our local lakes are all closed at night except for official events, so craziness on the water is limited and local deputies are not allowed to plow through boats.
