7 minutes to go and ........

Post by MikeR »

I'd like to publicly acknowledge Doug Norvell and Hugh Mithchell for their great sportmanship and help in coming to our aid Sunday during the final minutes of the WON BASS team tournament. I fished the WON bass team tournament Sunday with Tony Caparelli and we were on our last spot with about 7 minutes to go. We packed it in, donned our lifejackets and turned the key...click, click, click, click.... We are within sight of the West Ramp but too far to make it on the trolling motor in time. We attempted to wave down a number of boats heading back to the weigh-in to no avail. The very last boat coming around the point saw us waving and without hesitation turned and headed for us. Not only did they risk not making it to the weigh in in time but they provided us with a bag to place the fish in making the transfer much easier. It was fire drill to say the least but because of Doug and Hugh's unselfishness, both teams made it with barely 2 minutes to spare. Although we weighed just over 9.5lbs for 5 fish, it could have spelled disaster for the entire season as far as points go. The best part of the whole story, because we were able to weigh in we hit the 10lb option for $900.00 a very nice consolation prize for 19th place! Doug and Hugh you guys are great friends, thank you again. The Bacardi is on me!

I bet the problem was that black starting battery!! Hugh and Doug are great guys, and you did good to tell everyone about it too Mike.

just so all you guys know all mercurys and some other outboards come with a rip cord starter in your engine cover. had to use mine many years ago but it worked with a click click click from the bad battery. you need to wrap that rope all the way to the end right up to the flywheel and rip it off in one hurl of your body in motion. my partner and I finished 4th that day.

Yeah, and if that doesn't work you can always try push starting it (downhill works best).

Seriously, just carry some good jumper cables. Portable starters work great if you have the room and don't mind the weight.

I would like to say I am sorry that you have to fish with Capperellio, founding member of the Water Hawgz. He's so sponsored out that he don't have time to check them important things. Not all fishermen are self centered and obnoxious. Kudo's to the gentlemen that assisted you two.

We had one nearly dry cell and one very low cell in the starting battery and had run the recircs all day long on manual. Tony carries one of those quick charge starter booster thingamajigs and it was dead also. Poor Tony had to huff those fish up and then down that long ramp and then walk back up again. I believe he is thinking about starting some sort of excercise regimen after that experience and will probably pay more attention to his batteries! :)

Glad they helped you out. Whew....

So people know, there is a way to permanently wire a trolling motor battery to your starting battery and connect it with a flip of switch when required.

I have it in my boat and if anyone is interested on how to set it up, let me know and I can explain it. Fortunately I have never had to use it yet, but it is there :).

Andrew,

I know Tony, I have traveled with Tony and I have had dinner with Tony. He is NOT self centered and obnoxious. He is one of most generous, kind fishing buddy I know. He has a wonderful family and is a great friend.

Because he is sponsored doesn't mean anything more than he is sponsored.

I will tell you he would give the shirt off his back to help a fellow citizen. I know for a fact that he risked and was penalized at a Federation tourney because he was late helping two people who were stuck on the highway because they were out of fuel.

Perhaps you can keep your personal flames to yourself.

Mike, you are welcome. Doug & I appreciate the nice comments posted on this post about us. Thanks. We just try to treat our fellow anglers like we would like to be treated. Hopefully, someone would help us out in a similar situation.

When you threw in the "20lb sack at mead" I figured you were most likely ribbing Tony. But since I have no idea who you are, and I think you have posted about 10 messages, most of the people on this forum are going to assume you are indeed taking a shot at someone. There is no way to get symantics from a post...

But now that you have made us aware of this, we can assume your future posts about Tony are just in fun... There are also these little yellow round things to left of the text window that will tell alot about a comment... :)

They were probably trying to atone for all the trouble they caused at Havasu. My partner and I had the room right next to the and they partied all night long. Loud music and wild women, I'm telling you it was crazy. We just wanted to get some sleep but no Hugh and Doug had to party...........we finally gave up............and joined them.

They are both good guys and I enjoyed spending that week with them. We had a good time.
