Top 5 Results Lake El Capitan ...WON

Post by JJCJR »

We had 47 teams fish El Capitan for the first WON Team Tournament in San Diego for the 2008/2009 season. Here's how the top 5 finished. Fishing was tough for most of the field with fish coming here and there on this and that. Strangely enough, teams going out at the end of the pack seemed to do pretty well. The first place team had only 2 fish at 3pm with a 3:30 weigh-in staring them in the face!

Place * Team * Big Fish * Total Weight * Winnings
1. Cory Dispensiero (fishng alone) 5.53 16.15 $3,535, drew 47th out!
2. Mile Walsh - Lee Mc Dowell 5.59 11.12 $1,745, drew 43rd out
3. Frank Morrin - Mike Peterson 4.57 9.50 $925
4. James Smiley - Per Anderton -0- 9.43 $560, drew 42nd out.
5. Mike Martin - Kevin Martin 3.89 9.40 $670

For the complete results go to WWW.wonbass.com in the next couple of days.

Thank you to all who come out to fish with us. The next WON tournament in the San Diego region is schedule for 12/6/08 at Lake El Capitan.

It always amazes me that a guy fishing solo can whip dozens and dozens of top notch two man teams, it's like fishing with one hand behind your back it seems. Cory must be exceptionally good.

Thanks Paul! Yeah me and Brett Davies team up this year but he couldn't make it down. My carzy 15 rod on the deck octopus arm reaction self and his cool amazing happy go lucky skills should compliment each other well. It was one of the days that I usually have minus a blown tire on the way to the lake(last week Castaic), alarm clock battery dying while sleepng in truck so I don't crash and kill someone therefor 2 hours late with no practice yet still smashing them (2 weeks ago/Havasu),having my battery blow upin my truck and getting stranded in the middle of Nevada desert no to mention this being after only getting my entry fees together the day before the FLW Deby at Columbia River meaning no practice against world class fisherman, still at the topof the leader board day 1 one with only 4 giants (6-7 weeks ago), got weighin time mixed up at the Open while having a sack on Day 1 causing loss in days weight or all the other little things like the switch going out on trolling motor day 1 delta FLW having to go in and fix it 2causing a 2 hour delay in my whack fest of 27 pounds.

It really was allot of fun, I think practice and home lakes are over rated. I like just showing up and whacking them. Thanks to Art Berry I had a couple ideas after talking to him Fri night. One of whick had me a 7 lber come unbuttoned about 5 feet from me. It was basic fishing and a wide open bite for me. I must have caught 25 fish on reaction baits. One team watched me catch a 5lber a was like "wow I can't believe you would through that hear" I was thinking in my mind " it's not painted like a trout". Typical no worm on the deck type fall lake plus some stuff in the back for an once and a half weight. Awesome lake!!

One little thing did happen that stressde me though at like 12 oclock I looked in my well and my 3 small ones where belly up. The areator turned off or something on one side. I got them back to swimming and decide to let them have the best chance at living so I set them free thinking " no prob I'll catch 3 more" well at 3 after losing a donkey and missing a couple I was like what did I do? The I round the corner and pop out the back to the amin lake and there boiling everywhere. Score!!! caugfht a quick 6 fish in 15 minutes how we do at Castaic in front of another 6 boats. One of them days nothing spectacular though! Not like when I win another Boat next week and smoke your brother!! Huh!! just hope to get a Top 5 or so.

Great job Cory!!,

But I have to correct you....

There were really 17 boats total, 6 were within casting distance of each other, you pulled up and on your second cast stuck a good one in front of everyone, including us.

The following is the diologe between my partner and I.

My partner... holy crap dude did you see that, full on power fishing, just came up and hooked up!!

Me... ya, who is that?

My partner... Thats Cory, he's a good stick

Me.... Ya think? Kinda reminds me of Robert Lee, same fishing style.

Then we left.

Congrats Cory, I cant think of anyone that works harder for that win.

I'll be setting the Saltwater Showdown schedule before December 15th. I want to get past the next WON Team event on El Capitan on 12/6.

We've done Oceanside a couple of times in the past years. Would you like to fish there again in 2009. If so what format do you like... Calicos, Sand Bass or both?

Look for the next Shoiwdown event to start some time in March most likely on Mission Bay for "Spotties".

O side sounds fun. If you run it early in the season, it may help to pull a few more SWBA guys in. Kind of levels the field for at least one event for us northern guys. I like the idea of calicos only just to make things tougher, but either way is fine. Thanks John, phil

Mike, the S.D. Saltwater is a smaller event (at least for now) than the SWBA series. Last year we fished there with no problems at all. Parking was easy, and the fishing was good. The SWBA hit the perfect storm with a surf event, a Mako tourney, the start of an offshore bite, 80 degree weather and trying to fit 70 boats into an 80 boat parking area. So long as the event is early enough in the spring (before the campers show up and the offshore bite turns on) it should be easy. Phil
