Trailor hub dust cover issue?

Post by corkvet »

Bearing Buddy question: Any idea the cause of the the Bearing Buddy plastic hub dust cover to pop off while the trailer is sitting in the driveway? Trailer has been sitting about a week and a half?

thanks,

Never have had a issue with the covers coming off. Especially sitting. Maybe Neighbor kids or yours.? Bill K :)

I had both blow off this summer, I got new ones, went to clear lake and came home without them. I dunno, I'm gonna get some new ones again and hope they don't pop off again. :?

I know that loss of the covers can indicate excessive heat which means friction which means disaster in the near future. If the covers are loose to start with then not a big issue with loss, other than replacing them. However, it has been my experience that they fit pretty tight and so that aforementioned issue may be an issue.

Another possible cause is that you may have enough air trapped inside the hub that natural diurnal temperature changes can cause enough expansion to pop the covers. Perhaps the tires are in the sun??

I would highly recommend that if your loosing them while traveling that you periodically feel the hub to evaluate the possiblity that friction-induced heating is not excessive. If they are hot to the touch I would replace bearings and seals ASAP.

That's my two cents
