Re: no you did not
Yes they did that to me acouple of years ago with a BASS planner--i believe its against the law to do that and require you to send it back or collections will call you for non-payment, i was pissed and called them and sent it back, and told them to cancel my subscription and dont send that stuff to the cal guys again--XMAN
Re: no you did not
Happend to me about 3-4years ago with a book they sent, interesting book and all I could keep it and please pay or send back. Well it is illegal to send out unsolicited items and expect payment. How are they to confirm weather or not you recieved it?
I kept the darn thing and never payed for it - screw em I am sure they make enough money by people sending in checks for something they never wanted but guilted into purchasing.

If You Receive Unsolicited Merchandise (Civil Code section 1584.5)
It is illegal for a business to try to sell you something by sending you merchandise that you have not ordered or consented to receive. A business cannot send you unordered merchandise unless the merchandise is:
* a free sample which is clearly and conspicuously marked as such, or
* mailed by a charitable organization that is soliciting contribution and is marked as a gift.
If a business sends you something in the mail that you did not order or consent to receive, and has done so with the intention of selling it or another product or service to you, you have no obligation to either return the unordered item or pay for it. It is illegal for a company that sends unordered merchandise to follow the mailing with a bill or a demand for payment. (This rule does not apply where you have agreed with a business in advance to receive merchandise on a periodic basis, and it also does not apply to a good faith error on the part of the business that sent the merchandise.)

When a business sends you unsolicited merchandise it is considered a gift. This isn't just the common sense answer--but also the legal response.
I generally will return their envelope and / or billing info and write "thank you for the unsolicited gift".

Re: no you did not
I also received a book from Bass. It's a nice enough book that I decided I'd keep it and send them the $12 they asked for it.
I wanted to make sure they didn't send me anymore of them so I gave them a call. The woman I spoke to said we'll take you off the list and please keep the book as a gift.
From the previous posts it sounds like that was all she could say, but I thought she was nice about it.

I have had them send me hard back books with the same policy. Read them and sent them back!

Re: no you did not
Whatever your feelings are for BASS, I also received the CD and one of the last lines on the enclosed letter is that you can keep it as a gift without paying.....which is what I will do. Pretty certain they will not send me any more after receiving neither the CD or money.
Re: no you did not
THANK YOU ALL . It seems this is a common practice, but for me it was bass trying to get in my pocket again and i dont appreciate it. This economy has already taken all i have.
Re: no you did not
BASS used to send be all kinds of stuff as well. The kicker this year is that I paid for my annual subscription with my check card, waited two months for my first magazine, nothing, called them up and they had no record of me paying... They called me, I paid, the bank shows the funds sent to BASS (ESPN) and then to top it off, for proof, they expected me to send them a bank statement showing the transaction. I said to hell with it. They can keep my money, but they'll never get anymore from me

Re: no you did not
I got one too, sent it back in the prepaid mailer (at least they were nice enough to do that). I joined BASS and upgraded to a life member back when they still seemed to care about the "little guy", before ESPN got their $$ hooks into the mix. (GOTBASS there's your answer).
I think at that time in the membership literature there may have been a caveat saying that they may from time to time send stuff unsolicited, and you were obligated to pay or send it back. So I sent it back to keep from getting dinged on my credit report. (In hindsight, maybe I shoulda copied it THEN sent it back??)
