Just when you thought you had the latest and greatest in Lowrance GPS/Sonar technology, they came out with a totally redesigned unit with bigger and better bells and whistles for.... $2,549.00

Looks like I gotta replace my 9 mo. old LCX-38... sheesh!

Until they can come out with their own side-imaging solution, they are far behind the curve as far as I'm concerned... their "broadband" solution just isn't compelling enough.

Lowrance has been lagging in some areas despite it being aquired by Navico. Humminbird is makin a good charge with its newer units with some cool technolgy and user friendly software. I've always been a fan of BottomLine units but it seems they havent been able to keep up with the Lowrance steamroller.

Brian you have to stay with lowerance though because they are a proven piece of technology and there customer service is excellent. But I still have x65 's on my boat

an X-65... thats like from 20 years ago. LOL. I have NIB Humminbird 858C unit that I could sell ya for a Benjamin or two. But, I'm with you on the customer support point and getting more bang for the buck.

Point is those units are getting very pricey. Although not true apples-to-apples comparison, my highly upgrade personal computer (CPU) was $1500 and my 52-in LCD flat panel TV was $2400.

Maybe because its such a specialized piece of electronics that is costs over $2500.

hmmm you would think if HUMMINGBIRD was truly superior that all the long range sportfishing captains would be using it. Every Captain i know uses the Lowrance, Faruno combo. Those guys know how to use sonar way better than any of us and they chose Lowrance.. go figure.

Hummingbird just needed to bring something DIFFERENT to the table to compete with getting smoked by Lowrance ever year. Looks like the marketing meeting paid off.

From what I hear Darryl Lowrance has been testing them himself and there is a sunken bus in 60' of water on Grand Lake and you can look in the windows of the bus and see that it is a GMC. Not suprised as there is no way that Lowrance is going to let Hummingbird have all that business. Just biding their time as the technology gets better IMHO. Rick G.

This Humminbird and Lowrance- reminds me of Powell v. Dobyns. On ocean money maker boat I use Furuno- all the light boat and most sport boats locally use real side-scan sonars mounted in tubes that lower and rise.

Not sure what boats you've been on John, but the big boats don't use Lowrance... mostly Furuno all the way. As for SI, they have full 360 degree sonar, fed off a retractable dome antenna on the bottom of the hull. Their stuff makes all the consumer products look like childs' toys.

And it has nothing to do with marketing, at least for me... it (SI) is a real product that works real well, and currently has no competition... point is the new units ain't it!

For much of the smaller boat classes, the Garmin gear has a large cut of the market, and rightly so.

Glad to hear Lowrance is finally coming to market with SI, and will gladly evaluate them when available. I've gone on record many times regarding my preference for Lowrance, but as also stated several times until they come out with competing SI, they rank second in my opinion.

Hehehe!!! Still a lot of suble stuff to uncover, and with a thousand miles of Delta to learn in a short time, it sure helps to be able to run through a slough or other area with the SI set to read both sides, instead of having to make multiple passes to find those subtle little structure and cover features. Also, I've got a ton of lakes within a typical drive down South, and while many of the lakes are quite low there are still decent options available. SI works equally well in shallow or deeper water.

When Lowrance comes to market with their SI, it will be a huge hit. Right now, I'm glad not everyone is on board, as it is one advantage for those who have them.

I think if I moved to the Delta, I'd just plant a GPS transponder on Cooch's boat along with about 18 other incredible local's boats- or just have them tow you to the good stuff!!

Actually, one thing I've figured out so far is the obvious fact that there are fish throughout this river system... still seem to need to find those 'spot-on-spots', and while there isn't any "deep water" like what I'm used to, there is some deeper water to be found, and also the fish seem to relate to breaks, no matter how subtle they are.

I'll find my own fish, and make my own mark, even if it rises to the level of mediocrity!

Interesting that you mentioned current, as I experienced that firsthand yesterday and realized (even moreso) just how clueless I am when it comes to current. Incoming tide was screaming where I was fishing.

Spots don't mean much, if'n you don't know the specifics (as you guys well know). That's why I try to find my own stuff, and fish my own water. Never been my style to follow someone around and chase their fish!
