Rat Bast@rds...

Post by Kelly Ripa »

Twice in less than a year I have had to sit back and watch an oblivious shad netter drive right over the top of my water. I would like to hear the story the three boyz in the Basscat with the power pole attachment on the back might give in their defense for their actions on Sunday morning. Quite obvious that none of them had brains or they would not have totally blown my early morning find.

I was fishing a creek channel in the Dead horse area with a spoon watching my meter and the birds. Specifically I was watching an egret on the point in front of me when in came the Basscat on plane. They passed me and went to the very back of Dead horse’s central channel. While I watched another egret came flying along my bank and was really unstable wanting to put down on some bait but as it glided along it gave up and pulled up and landed in an oak tree. I kept fishing and was watching my meter very intently. Out comes the Basscat and it turns towards the coves on the right hand side of Dead horse. I keep spoon’n when I hear splash! I turn to see the egret that was in the tree has flown down and diving and running the bank behind me lunging into the water after a school of bait that’s been pushed. Cool. I wheel the boat around and pick up my dbl. assassin rig when in comes another egret. I’ve got three egrets on the bank lick’n their chops waiting for the bait to come back up. I’m casting a tiny dbl. fluke rig into the spot when in comes the Basscat.

WTF? I watch them drive by on the big motor within 30 yards of me and they go in to the cove ….I keep fish’n and they come out and directly over to the bush that I am fishing and three egrets are standing there staring at these guys as they start standing up and peering into the water not 30 feet from the front of my boat where I am fishing. With all the rucuss they made the birds fly away and they put it in gear and amble right past me….within 25 feet.

I didn’t say a word I just silently watched as they fired the main motor put her in gear and drove past me within yards. I wondered during the course of my day what they would have done had the shad popped up on that bush? If they had gone for the net I am quite sure I would have gone postal and as it was I found out that my new Champion can really scoot If I am so inclined. I went by them as I went into plaid (spaceballs.. Ludicrous speed ). What utter boneheads.

I believe the next time this happens I have a solution and will keep it with me from now on. The next time somebody has wrecked my morning spot in such a manner I will simply pull an M-80 outta my pocket….Light’r up and toss it into the lake right in front of my boat….Burrrrump! Problem solved and I get to watch the fireworks in the other boat while I get the last laugh. Stupid and ignorant I can handle….This boat owner knew all to well what he was doing and he flat didn’t give a rat whether I was fishing or not. ….SSSSSS……BOOM. Ha Ha! Seeya next time @$$H0LE.

Ask yourself was Kelly really pissed.....

I think one of these aught to do it. That really sucks Kelly, you would THINK that one bass guy to another should know better and respect each other.

I think your right Master Bailey...But I wouldn't know him or any of the three from the boat in a line up as I was too busy playing Walt Meek and seeing how far these guys were going to push their luck....I guess I gave them too much rope? Or was it the fact that I was alone? :?

Seal bombs are on my Christmas list... I don't give a rat who you are/used to be/or aspire to become...Next ahole with a net that eats up my water gets to watch the old man in the Champion go postal   . Now that right there is worth the ten day quaranteen boyz just so you can watch. Or maybe I can get someone to video the whole thing so you can watch it on you tube.

I think I'm wrong about the power pole on the Basscat. Whatever the contraption is it had better be really functional as it looks like hell and takes up a lot of room that's for sure.

Whatever Dave. Is a flare gun legal? Think I'm serious... ....Tell ya what I'll just absolutely pollute the atmosphere with enough explicatives that there can be no doubt as to whether it's a good idea to try and net shad in front of the guy with Torette's syndrome....

I'm going to give DFG a call this year and put them on to the illegal shinanigaans I witnessed this spring concerning shad. Pretty pathetic lake patrol on Casitas. Non-existant is more like it. Pretty much looked like 5 times the number of boats you site. 6 boats? Not like the old days for sure but I know it was closer to 30 boat trailers and such when I pulled off the water at noon. There is/was no excuse for this incroachment and I'm pretty much done putting up with it to tell ya the truth. What goes around comes around?

For sure as I watched these sportsmen later in the day fly lining their 'chovies and they never got a bite that I saw. Live shad didn't help them and yet my poor pretext for winter fishing got some fish into my boat. I know they have 100 fish days but not at my expense ever again Dave. I'll borrow a page from PETA and hound them until they cry foul! Leave me to fish the spot in peace and you can come back like big boys when I'm done or watch me drop anchor and troll for a bit. I've done it before and I'll do it again if pressed....take your choice. I got a few PM's on this thread and frankly I don't care if this person is a god....He has been doing this to others and they have bent over and given up their areas( Just the week before by the sounds of it ) No class..........And it ain't happening this way again in my boat....Don't worry Guy I'll leave you some...

Yeah....I was there and it weren't pretty. Kelly actually tried to be polite at first, but the tough guy (and there always is one) had to take it to the next level. It was a good thing they were closer to the mouth of the cove then we were or there'd been a pirate fight.
A couple of hours later, Rip pulls up on a couple of aluminum guys and sets them up with some robo's, hooks and sinkers......all in a days fishing. I've seen both side of the Rip in the same day....lets just say I would not Rip pissed at me.

Yep... a picture is worth a thousand words. Get pics of the perps in action, as well as their CF number, then post them here and, depending on the infraction, you can also provide copies to lake staff, sherrif's department, or whatever is appropriate.

Usually if you break out a camera they will slink off rather promptly. :D

Sucks Kelly, but fishing is a microcosm of society in general, and there are good and bad elements all throughout as you're all aware.

Unsportsmen like behavior isn't illegal or is netting shad with long handle 18' nets. I'm always surprised how many bass fisherman resort to live bait fishing with shad when fun fishing.
Been dealing with shad netters and live bait fisherman for decades. The 150 rope anchors, net boaters hell bent of scooping shad, boats circling you and trying to meter what your on and GPS the way points. It's all part of fishing our small trophy bass lakes.

Didn't mean to infer that it was, if that reply was directed at mine... that is why I said "whatever is appropriate". Breaches in consideration can be published on the forums, hoping they or their friends and family can see their rudeness in full light, while more serious actions such as poaching and such can be shown to the proper authorities... sorry if that wasn't clear.

You were clear to me Roger. The illegal activities I have witnessed I will reserve for my conversation with DFG and we'll let it go at that.

P.S. Tom you are right about the sharing the water part but I'm not talking about encroachment like they consider it in NorCal.I'm talking .................... WTF is this person doing encroachment...Remember I have fished SoCal most of my adult life and this was over the top and wrong. If they had waited a few minutes we could have caught fish...not bait.

Kelly, when I was a lot younger and less tolerant my reaction was to bounce a jig off the SOB's who pulled that stuff on me. Today you don't know who maybe packing something.
Roger, no I just wish bass fisherman would learn our fisheries are fragile and curb the live baiting and those dam long nets.

Scooping shad with a dip net is illegal if done under any power from either motor. Dipping shad is almost impossible without some motor power.

Rookies !!!

Get'yer'self a sheat of Dry Ice and break off some chunks to break off and wrap in butcher paper.

Get a 32oz Gator-aid bottle (wide mouth with lid) and fill 3/4 to 5/8th full till you can get the sink rate down for desired depth and away from the fish/bait while off shore (Or 1/4 full to float and top up at shore crest, tulies, grass lines .. When NON-FIREWORK "device" is needed ~~ place as chunk of Dry-Ice in the bottle ... Cap and then toss into bait hole. You have 20-70 seconds to move out of hole depending on vapor/pressure space and integruity of your container. Then fire up big motor, watch the concussion and come back later. (3-5 hours .... to retrieve on now exposed bank from waterline that dissapeared. )

At work we "used to" use Tin Gallon or Quart cans and 1/2 Gallon or Quart Bottle with compression lids and a pair of channel locks for fast action. Then quickly place under the trucks of those that were reading a book, paper or listening tothe Giants Game while on the radio. -- Beat feets and yell ........ "Fire in the hole !! "
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

This was the topic on one of our radio programs a while back. Don Iovino was our guest, and if you know "Pappy" you know he had a lot to say about it.

Don says that things have changed a lot and in the past everyone was a lot more considerate. Now, the attitude is that there is no sacred water and some think they can do whatever they want. We even had a caller that said that they had the right to go wherever they want on the lake and fish within a couple of feet of another boat and no one had better try to make them move.

It's the same on the saltwater. Boats will cut right in back of you and right across you troll patern, or fish so close to you that you can't even cast a line out. Considering the size of the saltwater, what the hell are they thinking?

Aside from the redneck solutions, what can you do and still stay out of jail or court?

What does the lake management say about all of this? (What lake management?) LOL

No law against crowding another mans fishing hole.. or not that i know of  Rather than vent on a keyboard you should have said something to them right then and there. A simple "excuse me im fishing here, could you please give me some room to cast?" will have a greater affect than blogging about it. True Story.

It's sad, but this goes on everywhere. Not much you can do other than speak up for yourself and not get ran over. Next time dont be so passive and your spot probably wouldnt have been ruined.

I've tried it both ways, from not saying anything to one step from a boarding party, and it really doesn't change too much in the result.
If I say, "You know, I'd appreciate it if you didn't crowd me that close" usually they will appologize and back off.
I've had people tell me it's not my lake, and I tell them they're right, but it's just common courtesy. If they don't get it when I say that, then it's like pi$$ing into the wind. They'll never get it.
For me it's about 75/25. Most of the time, they are clueless and embarrassed and appologize, and move away, and the other times they are embarrassed and belligerent and won't move.
How much I argue at that point is determined by how much of my fishing day I want to dedicate to talking to idiots.
If guys are trying to make shad, I usually let them come close if they ask. They're going to be gone in no time, and they stir up the shad, which makes the bass more active.
I will ask someone who's looks like they're wanting to fish close to me if they're in a tourney.
If guys are fishing a tourney, I move out and let them have a shot at my spot. After all, they have money on the line.
If they say no, I'll make a joke about not minding being rude to them since they're fun fishing, too, and we both understand that they need to go around me.
A little communication goes a long way.
I find most people are courteous once they understand the ground rules.
It's the jerks who blow past me in a cove (Kelly, you remember that time a few years back in Chismahoo when we both almost got swamped by some idiot in a speed boat) who are more of a problem. And more than half the time, it's a bass boat with people who think it's okay for them, since they're "big-time fishermen". Especially in tournaments. They think no one will rat them out.
And, most of the time, they're right.
But that's a crock.
It's not right, and they know it.
I guess everyone does dumb things at one point or another in their lives. Lord knows I have. So I try to approach these situations with that in mind, and leave a little room for the other guy to do the right thing gracefully, without rubbing his nose in it.

Hey Kelly- a flare gun is probably illegal  , but for your needs try a 12 gauge shotgun shell in it!! 8) As far as patrolling goes I'm in complete and total agreement with you- although on the 1 day I worked this month I was patrolling and even got to tow in a boat. I'm glad to hear there's 30 boats out now though- I haven't had a boat for awhile to see fer meeself. Sooo, let me re-phrase " it's a shame things like that happen with 30 boats out." The boat theoretically will arrive in Mid Jan. It was going to be here the 1st week, but they really aren't making much from me, so I think it got postponed- thus making the fishing culture safe from my negative influences. This boat should melt right into the foggy haze- maybe I'll paint the 250XS grey(or is it gray) too.
I hope I can remember how to fish with over 6 pound and a 4 inch bait- but if there's no jig bite I'm outta techniques!!! Randy at Robo gave me a new Lunker Punker in baby bass so I have a new toy to add to the punker collection.

I haven't been on Casitas for over a month or so, but last time I was there I noticed more boats going faster & faster, closer & closer to where I was fishing. However I didn't run across anything like you did, Kelly. I think the cast a nice heavy jig into their boat (oops) would work well. Then you could apologise & advise them they might be a tad close to you.

Funny, looking back it's been exactly 11 months since HBC1, which was the last time I was on Casitas myself (actually, the day after the HBC with Oakview Dave!)

I hope one of these days/years things return to "normal" and I can get back there.... while I never claim to have figured it out, I certainly learned a bunch on it and it will always be one of my favorite bass lakes ever!
