Boils?
Boils?
I would like to start a thread that lists where the Stripers have been found to boil consistently year after year. When they boil there are usually some birds around diving as well.
Just about every year I have seen them boil in Franks around September/October and Mildred around the same time.
Anywhere else? What time of year are they generally in this spot? Thanks for any posts!

Re: Boils?
I've seen it in Stockton nea the I-5 bridge numerous times. It's been a long time since I've fished that area so I cant remember the exact time of year but it was usually winter/fall.
Re: Boils?
They will be harder to comeby this year over there from the sewer kills on the first rain earlier this year.

Runoff to blame for shad die-off, Bay-Delta office claims
By Peter Ottesen

A die-off of thousands of threadfin shad has occurred on the Stockton Deep Water Channel and appears to be centered near the Morelli Park boat launch, where construction to restore the downtown waterfront is underway.
Dead shad have been reported floating on the water and being deposited on the shoreline that parallels Fremont Street, causing a stench that can be smelled for blocks away.
"I've never seen as many dead fish. There must be millions of them," said Ron Halvorson, a member of the Stockton Rod & Gun Club on nearby Monte Diablo Boulevard. "What is happening?"
Calls to the state Department of Fish and Game were referred to the Bay-Delta regional office in Yountville, where executive assistant Kathy Geary fielded questions.
"I understand the shad die-off is kind of a normal thing when the runoff from the first rain of the season flushes debris and oil into the stream," she said. "Threadfin shad use the top of the water column, so they are the species most affected when the polluted runoff occurs each year."

Re: Boils?
I saw a die off similar to the one in the article when I was living there a few years back. There were dead shad everywhere on the launch ramp and the shoreline near the launch in Stockton. It was crazy.

Late September, October and early November is the window that I experience the most schooling action where stripers boil on Shad in masses. They can appear at any given moment, anywhere on this river system. There are areas though that you can freaquent, that tend to have feeding, schooling stripers through this period a lot more than others. The key in being at one of these locations is no doubt based on the presence of shad, big schools of fall shad that gang up in specific areas during the fall.NVIOUS wrote:I would like to start a thread that lists where the Stripers have been found to boil consistently year after year. The east exit of Big Break where that flat drops off into Dutch is one area that can be amazing. Kellog Creek, betweeen the first and third bays has too, been an area that striper boils will blow yer mind! Down in Whiskey, around the first corner is that lil tulle island, is also a favorite spot of mine that can at times require a pace maker when they appear. Two of my all time favortie spots are the very back of Sandmond Slough and Rock slough just past the Bridge. Some of the biggest schools of shad will stack up in these two sloughs in the fall, and they can migrate from one to the other through the grate and levee damn that seperate the two. So the shad tend to pass back and forth thru that culvert and I have seen some of the craziest action on either side of that Levee. Ironically, the stripers can not pass through that grate, so yer getting seperate schools that come from either side. Franks, Lil Mandyville and Mildred can at times have great boils too, but the boils that occur in these places, are not on a regular basis due to the shad don't reside there, only git trapped ever now and then as they are passing through.
One of my all time favorite spot fer striper boils on this river though, is in early November down in the Stockton area below Ladds at the Turning Basin! Crimeny cripes, I've seen boils down there that last fer hours, seem to encompasss the entire area and there are masses of stripers busting shad as they move in there when the temps begin to really fall. This area though, does not go off like clock work as some of the others do every morning and evening. Ya just gotta be there the day they go nuts!
My number one, All time location for striper boils though, is down on Lake Powell! The Tuxedos will show up like clock work at 6:00pm in October in Glenn Canyon from the damn all the way up the Colorado to Antelope Canyon in masses. I have been there several times now visiting Yamamoto for pro staff gatherings, and these stripers will fill the surface for as far as the eye can see in every direction on this massive freshwater impoundment. And the fishing is absolutely crazy and furious! It IS, the 8th wonder of the WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, you're the best Cooch, this is awesome! Now I feel like I have some places to try next year. There's nothing like boilin 10 pound stripers (and the smaller ones are fun too)

Re: Boils?
The Striper fishing at Del Valle is great! Get in there, take a limit, and bring a friend....Take a limit for them too! The striper population is getting outa hand there and its hurting the black bass population...
