Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

A forum is a place to ask others opinions and express your own. when people get together to discuss a subject there are invariably differences of opinion. if there were not differences of opinion than there would not be a conversations. There would only be lectures.

What we all need to recognize is that differences of opinion do not necessarily mean that one person is right and the other is wrong. Both parties may be right in varring degrees.

If some one asks you how to catch fish. How many correct answers are there?

If someone elses opinion is different than yours does that give you the right to insult him? I dont think it does.

There are some thin skinned perhaps shy people with great knowledge good usable knowledge who will not post here for fear of being insulted or bad mouthed for disagreeing.

There are some very intelligent people who post on this forum, highly educated people with great insight into many areas. Some of these people would be willing to share their insights with us if we treated them with more respect. When we insult people they will stop posting here on the forum.

I sincerely hope that we can develope a more tollerant attitude toward people that we disagree with. Its ok to disagree but I think we should try to to do it politely

I have never turn down a request from somebody to learn how to tie jigs i just wont give up the secrets on some that i do tie.

To those who disagree, do you disagree that it is OK to disagree, do you disagree with being polite or pulling Jim's chain?

I agree.

The tough thing is many of the great anglers are more adept at catching fish/securing sponsors, public speaking, or guiding than defending themselves or positions on certain issues on the internet.

So they really don't have too much to gain, by leaving themselves wide open to slamming or flaming on the internet.

The Cooch is an exception, and I really admire his antics or tactics.

All the bad critics just seem to run off his back like water off a duck.

The internet is a funny thing. I have seen people endure a serious character attack, that in person would have ended in a serious *** whipping.

Interesting topic, and I wish to disqualify my opinion as a "great angler", because at best I am only average, so don't get confused! :D

Now get in your Legend and go catch a fish!

Andy

You post so seldom anymore that I really thought you had stopped reading the forum. I am happy to see that you are ay least still monitoring it.

Back in the middle nineties when it was mostly known as NCBF and when I was posting as Spinnerbait you gave me some advice that I have never forgot and have always followed.

One part of that advice was to never preapologize for my opinions by making the statement "Thats just my opinion" and the pther advice was to always use my real name instead of some invented screen name. "Stand behind what you say with the conviction that you believe in what you say by signing your name to it"
Thank you Andy it was great advice and I always try to follow it.

I am not a timid thin skinned guy and I really dont care who disagrees with me. At 75 there is not much I can do about insults anyway. So the best thing to do is just ignore them and consider the source.
Of course we learn with age and experience that most insults come from people who think they can make themselves look good by contrast by making other people look bad. Its best for us to just feel sad for them.

I want you to know that I for one wish you were back posting as you used to do, bringing us your wealth of fishing knowledge that you used to share openly with everyone

It seems that even Cooch has backed off some and I havent seen anything from Dean Sault in a long time.

Yeah I remember that thread we all agreed to use our own names, and Spinnerbait became Jim Conlow, and JJTopwater became me...

Yeah, that was about the same time as I started posting..I have always used my name, there were few at the time, if any that would have recognized me by just "mac"..

Anyone can sling insults and belittle others, it doesn't take all that much talent..It also doesn't take a lot of talent to be a fisherman, but it definitely takes a lot of talent to be a good one consistantly..I try and learn from all the users of this site and mostly I have..

There are a lot of people who post on forums for their own amusement, and others that post in order to gain or share information. Some are able to share info and have fun. Many of us long-time posters long for the old days where there was a lot of information shared, and occasionally some good natured fun to go along with it.

Over time many forums (not just here) have degraded into time-wasting juvenile jibberish, with no educational value or even entertainment value. Rude behavior has driven away a lot of the great information sharing.

ciao,

This is a great topic. I rarely if ever post but visit all the time. When I see constructive discusions I tune in but when it turns into a bash I immediately leave.

Thanks Jim for starting this thread. Perhaps others will start to treat others opinions a little better instead of blasting them.
