Donoho and Ellis Have Big Day in Mead Tournament

By
Larry Duncan
Tournament Director

Callville Bay-NV - After the freakish weather in December including high winds, rain and up to 10 inches of snow in the Lake Mead area, the weather for the makeup tournament January 11th was about as opposite as you could get. On December 13th the winds cutting across Lake Mead reached speeds of over 60 mile per hour as opposed to the slight breeze as boats launched at 6:30 am for the makeup tournament.

With two top three finishes in the first two tournaments Donoho and Ellis sat their sights on taking the top spot. Finishing third the previous day they cranked up the pressure on the rest of the field by bringing in another monster bag. Donoho and Ellis caught four fish early in the morning then made there run to the Temple Bar area where the culled out those four fish, added one more and weighed in the second 13 plus pound bag of the weekend. Their final weight was 13.90 lbs. toped off by 4.04 lb big fish. Their efforts landed them in first place and increased their lead in the race for anglers of the year.

For the second day in the row Branscum and Duncan brought in another limit and the only other double digit bag of the day. Their limit weighed in at 11.75 lbs, with a big fish of 3.97 lbs. allowing them to again finish in second place.

Having another big day was the team of Dean and Ryan Yamagata. Placing fourth in the prior day’s tournament the Yamagata team moved up a notch to third place with a total of 8.11 lbs with a big bass of3.57 lbs.

In fourth place was the previous days first place team of Clouse and Leon. Unable to pick up the big kicker bass they had the day before they still managed to bring four fish to the scales. Their total weight for the day was 7.97 lbs with a big fish of 3.62 lbs.

Finishing in fifth place for the second straight day was the team of Andreas and Stumpf. Not far out of fourth they weighed in 7.78 lbs and a 4.10 lb kicker.

The story of the day was the team of Bill Snyder and Alan Zamora. Fishing their first tournament on January 10th and finishing eighth with over five pounds they really wanted to fish in the Sunday tournament. After scraping enough money together for their entry fee and two options, they were able to fish. Around 11:30 am they called to say that they had blown an engine. With a hole in the side of the motor they were worried that the only fish they caught might not get weighed. They started limping home and got to within a half mile or so of Callville Bay when the motor completely quit. Flagging do Donoho and Ellis they were give a tow back to the docks. Having only one fish, they came to the scales just wanting to get the points for finishing the tournament. To their surprise their one and only fish weighed in at 4.88 lbs. eventually winning them big fish of the tournament. One of the two options they managed to enter was the big fish option. A happy ending to an other wise terrible day on the water. Thanks to Pat and Bob for bring them back in to the marina. It’s a day they won’t soon forget.
