I grew up in Houston, and unless you want to drive a couple of hours or more, you'll be better off hitting the salt for some specks and reds. This time of the year produces the biggest specks you will see all year. Light bass tackle is perfect for them, and you can get them wading or from a boat. Guides abound.

If your set on fishing bass while there, Rayburn and Toledo Bend are both a couple hours away, Fayette County Lake is about 2-2.5 hours away, and is a power plant lake, so it gets heavily pressured during the winter. The big fish lakes like Fork, Choke Canyon, Falcon, Amistad and Alan Henry are all quite far from Houston. Conroe is about an hour away to the north, and it is making a nice comeback. Livingston is also fairly close, but I can't remember it ever being really considered a great bass fishery. That may be different now though. It has been some time since I've been to Livingston.

My advice would be to try to find a trout and red guide and go get yourself bowed up on a big gator speck.

Toledo Bend.....My brother lives in DFW area and is seeing water temps ranging from 50-55 on lakes in that area. So that much farther south you will find some warmer waters. Prespawn fishing for sure. My brother did tell me that he found a few fish moving up, but most were still a bit deeper in his neck of the woods.

Good luck and have fun.

BTW watch the weather. Texas has been plagued this winter with some really strange patterns. Cold front from the north blowing hard for 2-3 days, followed almost immediatly by a warm rain from the south accompanied by 20+mph winds. The fish are all messed up, look for a period when it has been somewhat stable for a couple of days, that has been producing the best fishing.
