To try and help answer your question, it kinda depends. Alot of guys are getting into banding the jigs because it allows you to be able to change skirts without having to change jigs. If you buy a hand tied jig, it's pretty much on there unless you cut the skirt off. It really is just personal preference. Some guys say that banded jigs are a pain because the band will slide down you, but this is hardly ever the case. I myself fish both, and it really doesn't make one bit of difference to me. Hope this helps...

Re: Hand tied or rubber band?
To answer your question ask a few anglers like cooch or mark hiser of ganns jigs how many hour they spend producing baits the different colors to put out for anglers to use. Myself i tie several different styles of jigs in about 40 different color combinations and im always upgrading silicone colors there a never endless color selection i put colors together for my staff to throw they feed input back to me and i build from there. If your going to tie your own jigs before you do that you may want to get some bands put a few colors you like together for yourself try them if they work for you then tie them up for yourself. I tie right from the get go because after 30 plus years of tying it hard for me to do anything else. For the best tied jigs use coats & clark upholstery thread 150 yards 137 mill very strong thread. The two top pictures in my other post are solid silicone puffball jigs. The bottom picture is round rubber/silicone rubber puffball. ive been making and tying the puffball jig since 1985 and tying jigs since 1978

Re: Hand tied or rubber band?
Without question hand-tied jigs are the best. So tired of having strands of rubber all throughout my jig box. Absolutely will not buy any jig that's banded ever again, IMHO

Thanks for the replies.
I have been making my own with the rubber just to try different color combos like Mark said , I just wanted to get an idea of what other people like.

Re: Hand tied or rubber band?
Mark's jigs are phenomenal.
I use both tied and banded,
I prefer banded, because bands fail and the skirt material goes all over. Nothing worse than making a great cast over a good spot, and bringing back a jig with the skirt hanging from the hook. A wasted cast.
I've started wrapping my banded jigs and spinnerbaits with braid, and a drop of crazy glue. No more failing skirt bands.

Re: Hand tied or rubber band?
Tied. Way better action, the slip on skirts came along as a labor saving device to speed up production and reduce cost for the producer.
There are a few jigheads that are cast for slip on skirts, and they look a lot better, more like a hand tie.
I might buy some slip ons if the jig head or hook has a desirable feature.
But given the choice between two identical jigs, I would pick the tied one every time.
(Once in awhile this happens as a jig line gets closed out, and you can go back through the pegs, and find previous stock when each one was tied.)

Both are or rather can be good choices at times..Generally speaking with the hand tied jigs the skirts seem to last longer, so that is what I try to get..On my skirts that are banded I usually replace the band with a small zip tie/wire tie..I think you get a tad better sjirt action with a tied one though..

I have to disagree with Mark!
It's more like compairing Apples to LEMONS!MARK D. INMAN wrote:APPLES OR ORANGESWhich jig would you rather have ???

An old banded jig, band WILL break in time. Then a 4 year old BobbyD hand tied, it will never break!
From a jig fishermans perspective, I never want to deal with failures, either on the water or before I head out. Banded jigs WILL fail. I have 6 jig rods in the boat at all times, no need what so ever in waisting all that time in changing skirts. Just a BAD concept fellas!

Banded jigs work for some but like cooch said they well fail sooner or later. If you want quilty in a jig go with handtied jigs there is nothing better. Tell you what guys cooch is the man when it comes to throwin jigs there nobody better in his field.

Mark,
You need to be comended. I rarely ever post on here, but I read your post's and you are allways willing to give good advise and how to's.
Even to the the guy that says he wants to be your competitor.
My hat goes off to you. Some of the young hot shots on here should take a lesson.
Thank You.

Manuel thanks you for the kind words. If i can help the very day anglers or a tournament anglers with making there own jigs i want them to get the best materials for making there own and help any way i can. The cbaf kids camp coming up again i attend the first one and had a workshop on jig tying the steps from pouring painting adding the fiberguards to tying the jigs. Some of those kids couldnt hardly wait to set down and try there hand at tying and you would be suprised how many pick it up right away. Im looking forward to doing this year workshop again from collins lake.

Re: Hand tied or rubber band?
mass ...
all of the pointers given on hand tied jigs are good ... and another one of the the most important things you can get with a hand tied jig is Color Balance ... if you you use a slide on skirt that has more than 2 colors , the colors may not slide onto the jig head "proportionately "...
with hand tied you will get the orange on the belly , the brown on top , and the green on the sides ...or however you want to concieve the color scheme ...
Color Balance may or may not entice more bites , but it gives the fisherman absolute confidence that he is throwing the best bait he can ... such as Marks "Puffballl Jig" or Hisers "Ganns Jig"
and besides that , they sure look pretty ...
best of luck with your endeavor ............ (an old jig tyer)

For those who want a slip on type skirt jig head take a look at stamina quilty components www.staminainc.com they have several styles of heads and skirt colors too choice from. If handtied custom jigs arent in your future then there the best way to go.

Re: Hand tied or rubber band?
I got tired of gettin in the box to find my jig bands busted and saw a few manufacturers wiring thier jigs instead...
so I busted out my M/C safety wire and pliers and retied them all.
They WILL NOT slip but you cant get em off to change out unless you cut em off.... So I gotta retie to change em up.
