Which Loomis Jig & Worm Rod for heavy drop shot?

Post by TonkaKid »

Looking to get either a 853 or 854 GlX Jig & Worm rod for fishing a drop shot and also pitching plastics on pretty heavy milfoil weededges. Will be using mostly 16 pound line and weights from 1/4-3/8. Wondering which rod is better for this. I am torn between the two. Like the idea of the lighter tip for these presentations but am worried it will lack the strength of the 854. What do you guys use for this?

i have the 853 jig and worm rod.. it has plenty of power. I use it for heavier jigs.. 3/8-3/4oz jigs. I know its only rated to 5/8 but it has enough power to fish the 3/4oz on 12lb effectively, so I would go with the 853 for the edges and if you are going to actually flip deep into the goods go with the 854.

I'd go with the 4 power.

Mike Rooke, who won the Delta FLW on a drop shot, uses a Loomis MBR 844 for his heavy dropshot rod.

This is a great setup and works well.

I'd go with the GLX BCR854. I have one I use for jigs and texas rigs and was surprised that the tip was springy. Not super springy, but enough that I can cast a wide range of lure sizes well. Maybe because it is a Fast action as opposed to the BCR853's Extra-Fast action. Once you get past that tip section the 854 is powerful. I'd rather have more power to pull fish away from weed cover.

I know it's not either rod you mentioned, but the 893 "Senko" GLX rod would be a great rod for what you are looking for I think...It has a light tip but all sorts of backbone...It's pretty long at 7'5", but it's GLX light and a great rod for other things like hollow body swimbaits, 3/8-3/4 oz jigs, and carolina rigs, as well....now all that being said, my favorite Loomis rod, ever, has been mentioned, MBR844C, GLX. Either one you can't go wrong...893 has a bit more backbone than the 844, which has a nice parabolic bend...all my opinions I'm sure someone else thinks differently.

Mike the rod you mentioned is by far the best spook rod i have ever seen. I had the luxury of fishing one in Havasu and was blown away.

any problem with the 4 power and straightening out the 3/0-4/0 gamakatsu rebarbs? I saw this on bassfan as well about a drop shot setup for the delta that justin kerr uses. I'm still a little torn between what to get. thanks for the opinions though.
