How to catch suspended bass?

Post by BassinRob »

What is your favorite technique to catch suspended bass and why?

I would say cranks. But, what about those fish 30-50 feet down?

Hopkin's Spoons. Send them down like a rocket, jig em in front of the fish. You can see a 5/8 spoon pretty easy on the sonor.

First see how far the fish are susoended off the bottom. Once you have figured this out, tie up a dropshot, with the hook suspended that far off the bottom.

Here are two more presentations to try:
1 - Rapala Jigging Lure - it's made for ice fishing, but its design allows it to be very effectively fished slowly, maintaining a horizontal attitude, at whatever depth the fish are suspended...fishing vertically, of course, with a lift and drop retrieve that allows it to glide around at the fish's depth.
2 - Carolina riggin' a stick bait, like a Bomber Long A, Rebel Minnow, Frenzy minnow, Smithwick Rattlin' Rogue, etc. This one is cast out, allowed to sink to the fish's depth, and slowly worked through'em.

My Biggest Weakness

Post by ash »

Suspended fish are a big weakness of mine.

Tail Spins
Underspins
3/4 oz Spinnerbaits

I have done well at Cashtaic finding suspended fish around bait and catching jig / dropshot fish on surrounding points. But this is hit or miss for me.

Suspended fish are tough for me, I am hoping to learn more in regard to how people are fishing for them, especially since Spots seem to be king of suspended fish.

Go to Shasta lake, stop at Phil's Prop, buy a bunch of Kasmasters and Megabait 21/2" live jig number #3018, then spend a year or so on the lake and jig, jig spoons 40 to 100 ft deep all around Bridge Bay.

We always used Kasmasters when we lived up there..

I actually think NorCal (h'Oroville) Floridas are the kings of supended fish. With all the constant state of change in the flood control reservoirs, they pretty much live suspended except during the spawn.
