Dobyns Rods warranty

Post by bassmaster89 »

I have one of the old dobyns rods, what do I do if something brakes on it? Do I get one of the new rods?

When I took an old style rod back to Mel Cottons recently, they replaced it with a new design rod. I was taking advantage of the $50 over the counter instant replacement.

Yes, I got one of the new rods when I returned the broken rod to Mel Cottons.

I have had 9 of the Gen1 rods and have never had one single problem with any of them.Hopefully after all this time( that the Gen 1s have been out) your rod will be fine.It was only a couple select models that had problems.Enjoy the rod and STICK some TOADS!

No. I have stuck some toads(up to 9.5lbs) on the rod, but now its making a minor creaking sound where the top of the reel seat meets the blank.

It probably wont break  , but I was wondering "what if"... because of his new generation of rods.

the rod has a warranty and it will be replaced with one of the new rods IF it breaks and you send it in and follow the guidelines in the warranty posted on the Dobyns rod webpage. Pretty simple really until then keep reeling in nine pounders with it.

The old rods are warrantied of course. It is a $60 No Hassle over the counter warranty, not $50. All other info here was correct, except trouble with certain models. It was a shipment that I had trouble with. I pulled the rods back from dealers. They broke easy! If you've got one catching 9 pounders, it is not one of those :D

It does say that the replacment over-the-counter fee is $50 on the Dobyns webpage, you should probably have someone update the site, just to avoid confusion.

Are these rods typically breaking at the real seat? or is it just that this shippment had blanks that were not made correctly and can bust anywhere.

What is the deal with the rods for sale out there that say December 31, 2009? I assume that means that f you buy one of those rods and it breaks on Jan 1, 2010 or after it will not be replaced under warranty.

Is that correct?

I realize that the folks that are selling them are doing so at a discount but if the warranty is void after the end of this year is the discount worth it?

Just curious. I would like to purchase one but one of the attractions for me is the lifetime warranty.

Truth be told, most all rods with any kind of defect will break within the first couple of times they are fished.
I can't believe the things some anglers do to their rods, from dropping them on the pavement to sticking the tip into rocks to retrieve a lure. Any time you get a small nick or scratch in the high-end graphite rods we have today they become susceptible to breakage down the road.
I've also watched guys try to bounce fish into the boat and high stick the rod until it snaps.
Bottom line is, if you take care of your rod it will be around for years to come.
