Big Hammer Swimbaits Hit The Delta

The Hook and Mel Cottons will soon be stocked and be carrying The Big Hammer Swimbaits in their stores in many different colors and sizes.

These baits are KILLER for the fish - as well as very versatile for any application/technique you could wish to use them on. like casting or pitchin' on heads from 1/4 oz to 5/8oz .. or even bigger, use as trailers on Chatterbaits, Wadda Bomb's ... Even Bottom poppin'/rolling on a Carolina Rig , Bubba Shotting, -ect.

I have been fishing these baits since last June - and personally I have not been so excited to keep fishing a bait year round - since I used the "Sassy Shad" back in the early '80's...... And the Wadda Jig.


You can get so much use out of these baits time and time again with a dab of Mend-It to go with them ~ Each bait can litterally be used again in a matter of minuets - or switchout and save for later when the fishing is fast and furious to use again just like new on your next trip out. -- Just insert the tip of the Mend-It to fill the inside and pull out wiping any excess on the external openings to seal back up.

I ordered some new colors at the begining of the week -- and I gotta say - the detailing on top of this bait is The Bomb with the colors built into this bait !!

Definitely, Pete is a great guy, and builts an awesome swimbait.
No question, the color and sizes he poured for Cooch and I last fall is a definite winner. They are not just a great striper bait, but you can rack the greenies on them as well, You just have to think outside the box a bit to figure it out!

I love the big hammers as well, ever since Rob Belloni (Swimbait) introduced these to me years ago, I have always had a few packs in the boat with me. Great largemouth and striper bait and they chew'em at clear lake too

Plenty of local shops carry them including Bass Pro, Turners, Sav-On Tackle, Last Chance among others. They have been very popular in salt water for years, so you don't have to wait to get them up north.

Its a nice alternative to the Slider. They have been around for quite some time. Performance Tackle carries them. I think even Anglers Marine has a few pegs of them, or they use to atleast.

What kind of jighead do you use for casting and retrieving? Any different for working the bottom like a jig? I'm really interested in picking some up and trying them and I want to start simple. What are some basics? Rod, reel, line used?

MS- Not to speek for Cooch - but this is what I have learned.

The two different heads that I use - one is Big Hammer head in either the 1/2oz or 3/4oz. The other is the Pursuader heads in same sizes when available to purchase.


There are differences in both these heads -- as well as others that make the BH bait work differently all togther.

The Big Hammer head -- Is a straight head with all the detail into the eye's of the head and comes on an Mustad Ultra Point hook. (and available in different colors) This head as designed for the BH baits - Keeps the action in the coloring of the bait ~ and the tail action for awesome strikes.

The Pursuader head - It is concaved at the head and gives the baits "belly roll" to go along with the colors and tail action.

Both have their pluses and seperate strengths.






There are a couple more heads out on the market that work as well. One head to me - try's to add to much detailing into it - taking away from the bait's looks and action itself and for some reason seems to have a crappy hookset also. That head also try's to "wrap itself" around the front of the bait like a vulva. -and not let the bait work it's own solid pattern because of the hydro effects from that head detailed into the gills and "flaring" - with no base for it's weight to keep the bait stable.

The other head you can get at Walmart in bulk packages and is shaped for hte most part like the BH heads - It just has a smaller hook and needs some filing on the tips - but the price point is very affordable and comes in three colors.

Both the 1/2oz and 3/4oz that are readilly avaible will work great on all these baits alike. You can even "customize" the BH's with a drop of dip-n-dye from a Q-tip on the tail, belly, gills ...as well as a colored Sharpie pen if you desire.

These baits really are dynamite. I've been using them since the early 90's down in SoCal for saltwater bass. But I've done well up here with 'em too.
Here's a funny story for ya.
Years ago I was fishin' a tourney on Berryessa and bombing it bad. It was day 2 and I had squat in the well. I decided to try for some big fish and started chucking a rainbow pattern in the 5" size. In the midst of a daydream I felt a THUMP. I set the hook hard expecting to go bendo but the rod barely had a bend in it. When I got it back to my boat it was a smallmouth that wouldn't even keep. But what was funny was that the smallie had the ENTIRE BAIT inside it's mouth with nothing but the tip of the jig head sticking out between it's lips! He was hooked in the roof of his mouth and with the bait all balled up in there, I could hardly get a pair of pliers in there to remove the hook.
These are great baits and I'm surprised they haven't become more popular up here in past years.

I'm gonna take some to Texas with me when move this April. Maybe try 'em out at Falcon!!

Good info. What kind of rod are you using for the 5" and 6"? They don't look that heavy so I was thinking maybe a 734C or 735C. What lb test line? Braid, fluoro, copolymer?

Is a basic retrieve a steady retrieve several feet below the surface with pauses and twitches, similar to fishing a spinnerbait? How about working it along the bottom?

Perfomance Tackle carries PEARL Swimbaits, not big hammer. In my opinion a much better bait. Way more durable then anything else on the market. The action out you get out of a PEARL Swimbait is amazing. You wont have to wast time on the water using Mend-It on these baits.
Check out the creature bait that PEARL makes. "Da Bug" is a craw dad that is made just a durable as the swimbaits.
Check them out. You will not be dissapointed.

The Big Hammer swimbait heads are a great darthead style or swimbait style head they have a great balance point, ultra sharp hook. I miss the old Assalt jigs but that is life....
