Length of Pitchin' rod?

Post by snapitoff2002 »

I bought a Powell 765 for pitching and flippin, let's say 15-20lb test, but only being 5'9", I'm beginning to think that I should have gotten something only 7 ft to make it easier for long pitches....

What would be a better choice?

704?
705?

pitchin rod should be atleast 7 foot long reguardless of how tall you are.

Flippin stick should be 8 foot long if you plan on FLIPPIN the correct way. (takes lots of practice to get it down)

I have fished with alot of folks and only one filpped the same way I do witch I consider to be the correct way.

Jig flippin is extremely important when the bass are in shallow dirty water. Penetrate the water with zero noise and zero splash.
When done right the jig enters the water just as if you set it in with a 20 foot cane pole.

It is a deadly technique for BIG bass.

I have fished most of the major brand name filppin sticks and the lamiglass 806 wins hands down.
I have not picked up the powell yet, but from what powells I have had my hands on I bet there 8 foot flippin stick is a good one. If they even make on that lenght?

That rod length will be fine. I flip and pitch with 7-8' flip sticks and I'm 5'10".

The reason I say this, is that I watched that western bass vid of Randy Pringle pitching, and he had a neat technique where he just flicked his wrist with it starting in the up position... not lifting his arm too much.. I was thinking that the shorter rod would allow me to keep the arm down, and less fatigue over the course of the day.

But I was interested in what others had to say as well!

I believe Cooch told me he onlyl uses 7" rods? partly because he's so tall.

i sure wish i was 5'9" lol! It's cool! 765 powell works for me. If i could find a light enough 8' rod i'd be using that too. Pitch/flip why not keep that rod in your hand longer especially if you could flip and pitch with it!

I'm also 5'9", and pitch with a 6'8" or 7' med heavy jig rod.
I think it's whatever you get used to.

The longer rods will give you extra distance on your pitches... It's a question of accuracy for me.

I am 5'7" & just picked up a Dobyns 765 for pitching. Although I have only used it for a few trips out, I am liking it better than the other 7' rods I used to use.

Seems easier to me to pitch with it. I think once you get used to it, you will like it fine.

Im 5'7 and I just got the 705. I felt a 7"+ rod would be too much for me (size wise). I got it for mainly for frogin'. Ive not pitched with it yet, but it seems stout enough to pitch with. Its a great rod.

the first day I got it, I stuck this lil guy
