Where would I look to find Bed fish?

Post by Scoot549 »

Where should I look for bed fish? I am not sure and have only seen one to my knowledge. Am I looking for rocky areas, sandy, shallow or deep? I am curious about both Large Mouth and spots. The lake that I will be looking for them is Lake Don Pedro. Any info would be great and PM. If you like.

in water 2-10 feet deep. hard bottom or surface. like a flat spot on a rock. another good spot is on the flat area made on a stump by a saw. Flat bottom is key. a 45 degree angle is about the steepest they will nest on.
just get in water that is clear, put the troll motor on high and start looking. Back of coves is a good place to look.
On the bottom you will see clean areas about the size of a dinner plate. alot of time you will see many of these in an area.
Might have fish on them or it may not.

if you look around in a clear water lake right now you should find them. if not, keep looking threw april as more and more will be showing up.
just shut up and fish

First and formost get yourself a good pair of glasses!!

They are where you find them..I don't mean that as a smart arse Though I never found one only on top of stumps or rocks but I have found many around those areas like that, as they will bed around structure. Anytime you find stuff on the bottom of the lake is worth a look see.

I have found fish on main lake points to the very backs of coves from spawning in old tires to flooded campfire pits.. as I said they are where you find them and there will be others in the area most of the time.

Ya got to find the areas of the lake that are flatish.. not to shollow though. Most fish will spawn from 4 to 15 ft.

Keep in mind they need sun light and a bottom with slit, gravel sand type bottom but semi hard for the nest.

Put the Tmotor down and go huntin.. it is a exciting way to fish!

Good luck out there.. please remember be gentle with them this time of the year!

Here is a video we did messing around with a agua view and my cheap camera.. note water temp.. plus my worm was down off the shank.. when they are hot .. condition of the bait don't matter!!

This was taken in 12 ft of water.

I would not look(get right up on the bank) for beds. Boring(that's just my opinion). I would be staying far off the bank and making long cast with whatever you're throwing. For the most part, if we know they are spawning, why do you need to go up and say hi to them. I catch more bed fish at Clear Lake making long cast with a split shot or a jig into the tulles. Getting up on them and trying to make them bite simply takes too long. Can cover more water just making long casts. Relax everybody, I know there's a lot of people(including my son) that like to visually fish for bed fish. They can have it. Just not my cup of tea. D.B.COOPER 8)

Just make sure you put all bed fish rigt back in the water. Don't put them in the well and drive around the lake all day.

How about the Delta ? With the waterclarity not being so good can you still find/see beds or are you more just looking for areas that should hold beds. And the bass will bed through late april or early may, is that correct ?

Sounds about right for this year. I think it was a little earlier last year? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but is the timing of this season is off from last years?

Here is a pic I took a few years ago while pre-fishing for the National Guard. This big Mom was in about 8 inches of water. What I have found out if you find one bed there are more near by. The problem with bedding Bass is it can take all day for one bite and that is if she wants too. Most of the times she will not bite but lip your bait and try to move it out of her bed.

What is nice about bedding Bass is the males are not far off.

Catching bed fish alittle knowledge free of charge :D :D

I'll tell ya When you find that bed fish and shes locked forget about finding the sweet spot you'll be there all day get out a couple of baits Jig,Tube on a lead head, etc... And cast past the fish when she squares off with it hit her/him (depends on whos home at the time) with the bait. Do this till you see the fish getting EXCITED after you bed fish enough you will be able to tell when a fish is locked, skittish and getting pissed they will move there tail back and forth in a swimming motion real fast and square off on the bait again you have to watch becuase they are fast most of the time all you see is red thats thier gills as they open up to inheal the bait.

Set fast and hard and be careful and make sure the fish has it so you dont foul hook it and get your partner all pissed off becuase you had to release it

With practice you can get the males 99% of the time once you get that male put it in the live well back off and keep that bed in sight throw a bait of there like the floating shell cracker wait it so it suspends and bring it right on the bed and hang on if that female is watching she will run in to protect them eggs.

I am no expert but I love bed fishing and I have done alot of it from Clear lake to Oroville. works On the Delta to, if you can find clear protected water (good luck  ) back of cruiser haven is a good spot that can get real clear
