I'm so happy right now, after reading some post here and another website, pulled the cowling off and looked a little closer at the compressor, the wheel on top of it, which has 6 bolts, 2 where broken and the other 4 were loose, so got some new bolts threw them on, drove to orwood and fired her up to hear nothing but goodness   put a good load on the motor and same great sound. Thanks for all the suggustions.

I've got a question, maybe one of you have experienced this. My partner has a Merc 200 Black max. When we put the boat in gear, and start to idle, there is a loud clunk noise. It only does it in foward, and it does not do it all of the time. He says more often when I am in the boat with him. 190 more lbs. load on the motor i guess. Anyways, we have heard a few different suggestions on what it may be. The latest that we have heard was that it could be the linkage. Is there any way to check that, or how do you adjust it? Any help would be great.

The best way to fix that clunking sound of the Black Max is to have your friend purchase an Evinrude E-Tec motor. Problem solved.........BTW I have a brand new one, still in the crate for a great price..

If your referring to the linkage that puts the LU in forward or reverse, here is link that maybe helpful:

The slight clunk I was getting when I put a load on the engine was my lower unit.
