Fluke hookset?

Post by Salcone »

I had an awful lot of missed strikes on a Zoom Fluke yesterday. I rigged it with a 3/0 and 4/0 EWG hook and finally hooked up once I added a treble hook to the 4/0 rig. When I imbedded the treble into the fluke it lost a lot of action so I let it just dangle.

Any suggestions on hooking up with those fish?

Let them eat it like a frog, wait until you feel the weight before you set the hook.

Somedays the fish just don't commit to that bait. They bump it, slap it, tail grab it, just don't EAT IT. Catch them in the right mood and they inhale it everytime, so it's not necessarily something you're doing or not doing. Great bait this time of year so keep throwing it.

Perhaps it is the action of the rod or the type of line you are using.

I have good luck with an Owner offset shank worm hook.I choose the size according to how fast I want it to sink.If you look at this hook vs. the ewg you'll see that the point sits above the bend at the nose of the bait, rather than in line with it.I think this helps the hook-up ratio.3/0 is a good size to start with.Good luck

I often use a 5/0 hook with flukes and fish it like a senko...It works.

I have fished a fluke for spots and smallies for a long time and have had many days where you just cant hook them. I use small trout treble hooks for stingers. I run braid through the small treble hook and make a small loop, maybe 1 1/2 inches, and tie a simple overhand knot. I wrap the loop around the big hook after I stick it up to skin hook it, and pass the treble through the loop, so that it is tied to the main hook, then bury on of the points into the bait. It may be a little unconventional, but the light wire hooks on the small trebles work well, especially on smallies. you will be surprised how many of those misses you can boat.

Maybe you can change colors I notice sometimes that's the difference between hooking up and a big swing and a miss.

Maybe it is the rod you are using. I use a bcr 803 glx loomis with 12 lb yozuri and 5-1 gear ratio. The rod has about 3 guides of tip and then it has stiffness. After switching to this set up I have never missed a fluke fish. If you use too lite of gear you will never get a hook in the fish, too hvy of gear and you will pull it out of their face. I never consciously swing with this set up the tip allows them to eat it and the backbone starts the the hook, loads the rod and a little reel and sidesweep and they are on.

I like to fish em with a finese wide gap or fwg weedless hooked through the nose. Good hookup % and awesome action. If want it to get down a bit i add a nail weight accordingly
