How sore are you after a day of fishing?

Post by DougH »

I'm only 53, but after a day of fishing, I feel like I was the ugly stepsister, who was beat up on with golf clubs. My feet and shoulders just flat hurt.

Am I just a wanker, or do you get sore too?

That's a funny question - I'm 39 and after several hours I feel a little sore at times - a 6-7 pounder makes me feel a little better and the 12.8 I caught was better than sex - so I guess anything over a 6lber and you have nothing to worry about :)

p.s. a little advil before ya go and in the box wouldn't hurt

You have no idea. Three back surgeries at 34 and I battle to throw big baits. I love to watch a fish eat a big wake bait. But I dont know how much longer I can throw em.

I'm also 56, and the problem isn't soreness. It's sleep. Problem is, the night before I get on the water, I can't sleep. Too excited to go to bed. Then once I get in the bed, I'm like this in the dark- -trying to go to sleep. Then in the morning, (and I always wake up on fishing days before the alarm goes off) I jump up, load the Ranger, and hot foot it to the lake/river. A full day of activity on the water, and I feel like I've been beaten up. The sun beating down on ya, and on windy days, the boat rocking, and all the excitement, the concentration necessary to thread a truck/trailer/boat rig safely through freeway and city streets traffic ...after I get home, I'm whipped. :( Even then, I can't go to sleep, because I gotta call my buddies and lie about all the fish I *cough cough* caught, and how *ahem* big they were.. Takes me a day or two to recover. Soreness? naaah. Just my sore thumb from lippin all 'dem basses'! :D

It's just like anything else fellas. I'm a chef on my feet 12-16hrs a day 5-6 days a week. My relaxation is fishing. Its a different kinda sore. Muscles you don't use everyday. I fished the AC pro am on the Delta a couple weeks ago for two days and working untill 1:00am not sleeping, tossing and turning till 3:30 am to drive to the delta to meet my partner blast off at 5:45am and fishing till 3:30pm, weighing in, driving back home (6:30pm), doing it again 2 days in a row. Split fingers, bleeding thumbs, wind burn(sun burn) on every exposed inch. Friends who think you are crazy and just don't understand. I'll take this kind of tired any day. Nothing like these little green monsters!!!!

I usually don't feel it until I try to get up off the couch, at the end of the first day of my fishing week. Now that is tough. My *** feelsl like it is glued to the seat.

By the end of my week, and 5 or 6 days in a row on the water, I am not feeling anything. The first day is the worst. I am almost 50, and have had 14 different surgeries.

Oh, and I get no sympathy from the wife either.

This is an easy fix, fish more often; it’s just like anything you do, the more you do it the less you hurt.

This schedule below helps me prepare for multiple day tournaments. The schedule is a two week cycle. I'm sure it will work for everyone.

Start off with: Monday fish with your girlfriend
Tuesday do your yard work.
Wednesday fish with your wife
Thursday golf with your girlfriend and your wife.
Friday fish with wifey and girlfriend
Saturday fish a tournament
Sunday fish same lake as tournament again
Monday golf with wife and girlfriend
Tuesday fish with girlfriend
Wednesday hire a lawn crew to do your yard work, golf with girlfriend and wife instead of doing yard work.
Thursday fish with wifey and girlfriend
Friday prefish for tournament
Saturday fish a tournament
Sunday fish with girlfriend
Monday fish with wifey
Tuesday call lawn crew, go golfing

And so on..................

A bunch of little girls! My body is shot and half in the grave and I’m celebrating 11th anniversary of my 49the birthday. I pre-fish three to four days for a two day tournament and half the time I’m throwing a swim bait and not one of those little 4 inch ones either. After a day of fishing I get home and I will pump some iron, do some sit-up and push-up and finish it up with a mile run. None of those little sissy things MikeD does. And If I’m not wore out by then I watch the wife cut the grass.

I was born in a cave and raised on the mountain, loving and fishing is all I crave.

I don't know ya like MikeT does, but yeah, yer a wanker! HAR!

I only git sore before I go fishing, like from Midnight to 5:45am! I tend ta stray from the meds, fishing is my drug of choice.

My biggest ploblem actually, is when it gets hot, and I fergit ta drink ALL 5 bottles of water I brought that day during the summer! The headaches are devestating at 5:00pm!

I'm 45 and I spend my tournament day paddling and oaring in a kickboat for 9 hours a day. I try to get plenty of rest the day before an event. I also try to get in a few workouts each week along with some mountain biking. I think if your triing to go from 0 all week to 100 for a day on the water you'll feel it. I also try to eat as healthy as I can while on the water. Drink lots of water. I really think that exercising and eating good foods with plenty of rest will help you at the end of the day. Just a float tubers 2 cents.

DougH, it has nothing to do with being an *** but all to do with being soft, man up and get into shape, round is not cool. If your sore after fishing, unless it's full out reaction bait fishing for a few days in a row then your soft. Get in shape and then you will not be sore, plain and simple. It's not that hard, walk more and do a little man work and your not sore anymore. BTW, your only 53, not that old IMO but you can us it as an excuse if you want.

Whatever Guy..
You have no idea who I am and what I spent my life doing that makes me sore after a day of fishing.
After 26 broken bones, 3 shoulder surgeries along with numerous others, alond with being deeply arthritic, all from "being a man" as you like to say, forgive me for being sore at the end of the day. If you're as much of a stud as you think you are, I get the feeling you'll be a bit sore "at my age" too. So, as far as you not thinking responses like your's doesn't make you appear to be an *** in my or other peoples eyes, think again. But just as you don't know me, I don't know you at all, so maybe you're not.... it just seems that way.

A guide? Not me. I answered the question in honesty. If you don't like it then too bad.
DoughH, so why ask this dumb question if you have all this baggage then? What, are you supposed to feel like gold when you've been broken down? Whatever then, maybe you need some other form of enjoyment than bass fishing, try trout with powerbait and a rod holder on the bank, I'd suggest the Mammoth area.
