help finding a frog rod!
ive been using a gl3 7' heavy for my frog fishing with a curado 201sf... would like to upgrade my combo for frog fishing. what is the best frog set up. anyone with suggestions. thanks Cesar
Re: help finding a frog rod!
I have been really enjoying the Powell 735. If you're doing a lot of open water walking I would definitely think about the 725 but the 735 can handle it all, the water and the slop. Also works well for jigs and some small swimbaits.
Re: help finding a frog rod!
Your going to get every rod is the best, but do yourself a favor and check out a Dobyns 736c before you buy one. I love that rod for frogs and wakebaits

If you like a shorter rod, the St. Croix Legend Tournament "Big Jig" rod would be an excellent choice. It's 7'3" long, extra heavy, fast action. If you like a longer rod, the St. Croix "Big Gulp" is a stud of a rod. It's a 7'11", awesome frog rod/flippin stick. You can see em at www.stcroixrods.com or at the bait barn. www.baitbarn.net

Re: help finding a frog rod!
I have 3 frog rods on my boat, there all for different types of frogging. The powel 725 has a little more taper than the 735 and walks the frogs a bit better. But if I am in the thick slop the 735 with 65# braid does it all. For open water that diawa light and tough frog rod is really nice or a powel 733 is about the same.
If your looking for 1 frog rod, I would go with the powel 725. Sorry if I am preaching Powel but keith gave me that 725 because of a mix up in shipping. That says allot about a company IMO.

As you have read so far and you will continue to read alot of folks will recogmend a 735C. I personally use a Dobyns 734C. But I personally use about 1 power lighter than alot of people. This rod I feel allows you to set on a frog sooner due to its lighter tip and action. Which for me results in more hookups. I have had no problems with getting the bigger fish out of the thick stuff. Best example I can give you is when I caught a 7.14(my PB) on a frog last year. I was fishing a weedline in the south delta and right in the middle of the weeds she blew up on it. She went back down and I pulled her right out and into open water VERY easily. And got her to the boat pretty fast. So its got enough backbone to get bigger fish to the boat.
Also something to think of, due to its lighter tip it allows you to walk the frogs pretty easily. I hope this helps you out in your decision. If you want to try this particular rod out give me a call and if you are near the delta I will get it to you. You can use your reel so you will know exactly how it will perform with your gear. Let me know! You can email me at jasonconser@yahoo.com or send me a PM on here, give me a call at 925-550-5271, or simply reply in this thread. Again I hope this helps!

Re: help finding a frog rod!
I have a couple 734's, and a 735.
The 734 works nice in open water, but the 735, is built for the nasty nasty stuff, and will rip them out of it. Doesn't really cast a mile like my 734's. BUT, I have noticed that if someone were to have one frog rod, I would probably go with the 725, because the action is a little slower, and the parabolic bend would be more even. So you could cast easily, but still have the backbone.
Anyhow, I love that 735 when I do get a hook up.... Only 3 frog fish tonight, but I just brought them in with whatever salad they had on their faces! The Curado E7 is pretty nice too, cause it handles the fish, and gets them back in a hurry.

Re: help finding a frog rod!
I had my first true frog fishing experience yesterday on the Delta courtesy of D-man (Derek Rowan)..My frog rod is an AllPro APX72XXHCA which is really too heavy in action to walk a frog easily, but with practice you can get it done..I had 5 on and boated 4 so I don't feel all that bad about my first real frog fishing attempt..Everyone of the rods listed will give you a great frog fishing experience, I would recommend you take some of these guys up on their offers to let you try their rods and then make your selection..D-man was using a Dobyns 735 I believe and it was a superb rod for the task..Whatever you choose, I am positive you will have one of the most exciting times of your life using it..There is absolutely nothing in fishing that can compare to a great day of frog fishing for a pure adrenalin rush..

Dobyns 736 Hands down. Pulled in a few 7's, and an 8-4 last year on it without a problem. I've used a Dobyns 765 and 766 for frogs as well, but the 3 inches less just makes it a bit easier to fish all day.
Re: help finding a frog rod!
Amen to that. The new Dobyn's blanks are amazing. The new 736c is amazing for froggin'. I love love love love this blank.liveSTRONG wrote:Dobyns 736 Hands down. Is everyone rockin 736s now cuz the 735 blank is lighter than Gen1?
Re: help finding a frog rod!
I needed to replace a lost (rod overboard) Dobyns 735c and shopped both the 735c and 736c. I did a side by side comparison and went with the 735c as the tip is much softer and works better for those of us who throw frogs on the Delta all day every day in every condition and want superior walking action. The 735c's backbone has everything I need and then some.bpm2000 wrote:Is everyone rockin 736s now cuz the 735 blank is lighter than Gen1?

Barrack has a frog rod with Falcon called Bobby's Perfect Frog Rod. He showed it to me at last years Pro-teen and it was a sweet rod.

Re: help finding a frog rod!
I personally enjoy using the 735C and 736C Dobyns rod with the full cork grip. Both these rods are very light in weight with plenty of power to move large fish. I strongly suggest checking them out before making any purchase. Please feel free to PM me if you would like to know where the nearest Dobyns dealer to you is located with these in stock. I will be happy to do that for you.

Re: help finding a frog rod!
Lost rod was gen 1. Heard a lot about the new 736c so I thoroughly compared it to the new 735c before buying a replacement. Fished the new 735c Tuesday and had 6 frog fish biggest going 4 lbs. The true test comes later in the "season" when the weeds get thicker but I used the old rod all of last year on the Delta with no problems at all.bpm2000 wrote:was your lost 735 a gen1 or gen2? thx for the comparison info.

Take a straw broom and cut the handle off. Tape your reel on that mother with 80# braid and wail away.....
