Fish Attractants

Im sure this topic has been covered in the past, but i have a couple of questions about fish sents.... I have been using Bang for a while now but I'm thinking to changing up to Smelly Jelly; what are your favorites?

Also - how many of you match the sent to the bait? Do you use crawfish sent on jigs and shad sents on shad style baits, etc...

I usually use sent in the winter and at night. That mega strike stuff on senkos and worms is good for me. I use that bang stuff to because it doesnt gum up the rubber on my jigs as bad. shrimp flavored smelly jelly is really good, so I dont know if matching the hatch on bait scents is that critical. Just a warning though, keep your scents in a zip lock bag or a plano. This time of year those scents get hot and turn to liquid and can really screw up your carpet. Every tube of mega strike I have ever had breaks open on the bottom and screws up my carpet.

I also pour and tie my own jigs and lead heads. Berkley makes a product called Gulp cut bait. You can use a tube block (lure craft sells them to cut the tails on tube baits) and cut it into strips to tie into your jigs. They dry out fast and once they go into the water it will decompose in your box, but its worth the trouble.

I've never used either Bang or Smelly Jelly, so I can't comment on those, but I use Mega Strike. It's water soluble, and a little goes a long way. If the scent isn't water soluble, the fish wont smell it.

Carolina Lunker Sauce is another one I like, but it smells something awful! I mean it. Like gag reflex type of awful. But he fish like it. Crawfish is what I had the most success with.

I pretty well stick with smelly jelly or Pro-cure. They have scents that cover all fish and work as well, or better, than all the brands out there. Bill K

I use smelly jelly,basswax , pro-cure, and carolina lunker sauce. Different ones at different times. I mostly use it to block bad sents rather than as a attractant.
As far as matching the scent to the lure i don't worry about it because as far as i know a bass doesn't smell my spinnerbait (with craw scent) and say hey that's not a crawdad nor would he smell a jig (with shad sent) and say that's not a shad. I mostly think they look at it smell something good and just HIT IT or don't hit it.
Oh don't give your partner a thing of basswax he might just accidently use it as a chapstick and you will be bustin up inside (sorry brudda hitty !! )

I also keep a few different scents.

Bang for my jigs, flippin, and sometimes my cranks. Megastrike for plastic worms and yamamoto's scent for frogs, swimbaits and stuff that I want a good lubricant on. Yamamotos scent is actually quite good IMHO, just harder to find.

I use a "Juice Jug" on the deck filled with Kick'n Bass. It is made from fish oil and stinks plus it gets all over the boat when you dip a worm or jig then cast. You can get it off with a product called Greased Lightning that dissolves the oils and doesn't harm the boat finish. Messy but I know the stuff works.

Edge Hot Sauce for small soft plastics, Pro-Cure for swimabits and a
combination of fresh garlic and pure anise oil for pork trailers.
Smelly Jelly is good if you can handle the strong odor. Don't use anything on hard baits.

Two brands i use are Smelly jelly (shad, basshammer, and crawfish) and Pro-cure ( corn, threadfin shad, trophy trout, throphy bass).

Of all of them them most obvious sucess was corn scent for trout, but I believe that anything that covers up human scent is a good idea.

I don't think that bass are consistent enough to pick just one scent sometimes they want garlic, or earthworms scent or shad...it may be relating to what they are feeding on at the moment but who knows....part of the fun is try stuff.

I use Smelly Jelly of all different scents. My 2 favorite's being Shad and Bassfeast. One thing about Bassfeast....make sure you get it ALL off your fingers before wiping your nose otherwise it's the only thing you'll be able to smell all day

If the scent isn't water soluble, the fish wont smell it.

I don't believe this statement for a split second! First time I've ever heard that comment.

I've used BANG ferever, it indeed is an oil base and I have seen first hand in a tank at ISE seminars, they CAN detect the difference and will react possitively to it!
