Anyone buy an out of state boat and register it in Cali

Post by TZ1 »

If I buy a bass boat in Arizona what is the DMV going to put me through to register it in California. Cost? Safety Inspections?

Sales tax will get you good! If you didnt pay for it in the state of purchase. They wont charge you if they know its going out of state i believe. Make sure you save room for that on the loan or bank account. Besides that the luxury tax is the only other charge you will receive. I could be wrong, i havent gone through it many times yet myself.

You should only have to show that bill of sale and the registration for said boat. Have a bill of sale, for the boat and trailer. You do not have to register, etc the engine. You will pay sales tax on the boat and trailer cost. Reason for bill of sale on them only. Should about cover it. Bill K :)

You'll also need a certified weight on the TRAILER only. This is the hardest part. Launch somewhere you can leave the boat or leave someone with it and get an UNLAIDEN CERTIFIED weight at the nearest public scale.

I bought a boat from Washington almost 2 years ago, unless they changed the deal on the trailer weight, I did not have to do it. I did have to take the trailer to my local DMV so they could inspect the serial numbers and whatever other data they needed. It was actually pretty simple, besides the trailer inspection, everything went just like when I bought a new boat in the past...just paid the sales tax at time of purchase and registration at time of trailer inspection.

Bought my nitro at Bass pro in Vegas and just needed the bill of sale when I regeristed it in california. You will pay the sales tax but didn't need the trailer weight.

If the sales tax is lower in the state where you're buying it, would it make sense to pay the taxes there, instead of in CA?

You pay sales tax in the county you live in. Dont pay where you purchase .

IF the state where you are buying the boat charges you tax for your purchase you must bring a copy of that to the DMV when registering your boat. It will be credited towards your "use tax" for the boat. "Use tax" is the same percentage as the "sales tax" for the county where the boat will reside. If you don't have a bill of sale with the motor seperated out.. expect to pay tax on the entire purchase....

Would be nice, but California is going to get their tax from you.. So be prepared to pay California. Bill K :)

I brought one in from Texas a couple years back and had to take to the Highway Patrol office for them to verify serial numbers, etc. If I remember correctly, I had the option to bring the trailer to DMV, but the area was too tight. Beyond that it is pretty straight forward.
