GLX vs. IMX and Ocuma vs. Shimano

Post by Scott D. »

I am getting a new 6'6" Med Hvy spinning rod for throwing football jigs on. I have about 16 GLoomis rods already, but I can't say that I notice a big difference between the GLX and IMX. Do any of you really notice a difference in them, pros and cons on each. Also, I am thinking about trying out an Ocuma spinning reel on it. I have some Daiwa Regal-Z's and some Shimano Stratic MG's, but those Ocuma's feel pretty nice. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

Try the Okuma Epixor or Stinson....

These are both good reels for what you'll want to use them for. I am sponsored by Okuma and have swapped out 95% of my reels for Okumas now. They are smooth with the Epixor being a 10 bearing reel and the Stinson a 7 bearing model. They are available in a few different sizes to accomodate different line tests so take you rod with you when you go to buy so you can feel the balance in the set-up. Good luck.

I have 2 IMX's and 1 GLX, and have owned some of each in the past, as well. The difference between the 2 is very minimal, and not really worth the extra $100+ for the GLX. Both are extremely light and sensitive. I have always been a hardcore Shimano reel user, but I have quit using their spinning reels because the quality has gone down. I dont know about the MG, but the regular Stradic is crap, and the Symetre, Sahara, etc just dont feel solid to me. I now use Quantum Catalyst Pti Inshore spinning reels (I use them on saltwater flats too) and will never go back. I like the "20" size best. The Quantum is superior in every way....smoothness, looks, drag, feel, bail construction. It is just a rock solid, very dependable reel, and at $100....absolutely cant go wrong on that one. I still believe, however, Shimano makes the finest baitcasters out there.

I have about the same or more loomis rods as you ... I've slowly been switching to GLX. Depending on the desired aspect of the rod, I think there's some differences. As for the general aspects of the rod and the particular model, there may or may not be much difference. However, in general, for the MBR/SJR series they're basically the same EXCEPT that the GLX is slightly softer and very slighly lighter ... So if you're wanting a jig rod for say the delta, I'd stick w/ IMX (MBR784) if you're going ot use mono. But if you're wanting something to throw say flourocarbon (less stretch, but don't use braid please), and don't mind the extra cost, GLX is not a bad choice.

The new BCR series like the BCR803, I love for worming the delta. It has a more parabolic action as compared to the MBR series ... I'm thinking about investing in a BCR804 for jigs.

Some folks have complained that GLX rods break a little easier ... but I suspect they're just not making the proper adjustments when using that blank.

As for the spinning reels, I've used Okuma, Shimano and Diawa ... I've settled on Diawa's as I believe they have better drags than the Shimanos .... The Okuma reels are fine, but depending on the model, they're price near some of the shimanos and I believe Shimano's and Diawa's are built better.

I've bought a bunch of new Diawa Capricorns from the internet for ~60-70 and for that price, they're great and I'm not using anything else.

For casting reels, Shimano's rule ... they're easy to clean and repair. You can do that in a cold winter's day ... the Diawa casting reels are fine as well, but they're too many small pieces in them that can break or at a minimum, difficult to maintain yourself.

Hope this helps!

So, in your opinion the IMX is a little stiffer?

Post by Scott D. »

I haven't noticed that difference, but it would make sense. If that is true then I may want to go with the IMX, because I want some hooksetting power for the 50 foot+ jigging!!!
