Looking for a Johnson mechanic

Post by BassManDan »

Long story short, Sonoma, Sunday morning =

The details: 1997 Stratos 295 PE, 1996 200 hp Johnson Venom

I was running back down lake at about 4800 RPM's (my cruising speed) and I heard a noise, followed by a brief loss of power, I come off the throttle a bit (4000 rpms) and just head straight back to the launch ramp. Got my rig, went to power load on the trailer and I couldn't keep the motor running after putting it in gear.

I have a partial feeling and a strong hope, that it is something simple, I know that these motors are known for their ring issues and I definitely try to be nice to the motor, so I do run plenty of oil and rarely run over 5200 rpms and rarely longer than a minute or two at a time.

I know also that parts are not too easy to get for a Johnson of this vintage and that is of course why I sincerely hope it is some small issue.

With that, if anyone knows of a good Johnson mechanic in the Sacramento or north of Sac area, a recommendation would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

Precision Marine

* (916) 248-4943

2183 Benita Dr, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670

Don't know if this place is any good but that do service johnson outboards

Does it stall when at low rpms. If so it sounds like what happened to my Opti. It turned out to be a $25.00 spring that held up a belt for the air pump

Give Frank at Inland Marine in Antioch a call. Does great work, not expensive and very reliable.

He is in Galt, but Lyle Gosset is a great mechanic and his prices are also great.

Thanks to the folks who recommended Lyle Gosset, he was fantastic, far above and beyond. Problem fixed (fuel primer bulb) and he was kind enough to show me some tricks, give me lots of information, and I found out he does trailer brakes too (next month).

I'll give the "+1" to Lyle anytime!

I strictly employ female mechanics in that department

I wonder if Johnson outboards would benefit from using Viagra as a fuel additive

Dan,

Sorry to hear about your engine.

There is an excellent mechanic in Weaverville, CA.
His name is Dave Parks and he knows these engines very very well.
A friend of mine is running on a rebuild for probably 6 or 7 years with no problems.

Send me a PM and I will get you his contact information.

Other than this bummer event, I hope your research and summer are going well.
