I got my Hook and Skirt for punching

Post by Marty »

Just pick up some Bub Tosh’s Paycheck Hooks 5/0 and Skirts down at Hook, Line, and Sinker. Last year I was using Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG hooks for punching and this year just switch to straight shank hook (Owner 4/0) which is working real good (thanks Gene). The big difference I see in the Owner and the Paycheck is that Paycheck is thicker and wider at the gap. The barbs on the shaft seem to be a bit bigger also and 40 cents a hook. I have been using shrink tubing for some time as with my drop shot hooks. I have never used a skirt for punching and still trying to figure out if the skirt will help with the punching, pulling the bait out of the mat or is it just for looks?

I also use Bobber Stoppers and one more item that I will let you guys in on. Before using Bobber Stoppers I would use rubber pegs and when I did that I would use the left over rubber peg that was cut off from the weight and use it in the eye of the hook. I would run the leftover peg through the eye of the hook and cut it down to ¼ inch stuck out on each side of the hook. This helped in keep the bait on the hook. One last thing – I still try to use rubber peg along with the Bobber Stopper but on these new tungsten weights it is harder because the holes in the weight are smaller – I still try to do it.

Now I use three items to help me keep baits on the hook – “O-Ring on the baitâ€

One of the big reasons I went to using a straight shank hook was because of the Snell knot – it worked on the EWG hook but not as good.
Working on my frogs right now for this weekends Snag Proof but once that is done I will get some pic’s going and will post them.

But in the mean while check out Bub Tosh’s video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFmNieom ... re=related

How about my question about the skirt for punching is it to help with the punching, pulling the bait out of the mat or is it just for looks?

Rob- Here is a pic for you ....

Also what you may notice - that I added a rattle in-line on the Beaver set up. Both were with 1.5 oz Tungstens and 4/0 Paycheck hooks using the heat shrink that was supplied for bait keepers that were also included with the hooks in the package.

There were mixed results Tues and Wed with DeltaLuke and I using them after the winds came up virtually killing the frog bite - and we then later started punching.

Our biggest fish may of gone 4.5 on the Chigger out of both days. Alot of our fish came yo-yo'ing it on the bottom of the mats vs. the bottom of the ground.

DeltaLuke and I both concurred durring both days ~ that we needed deeper water than the mats themselves that we were punching - leading onto deep ledges ....... as we cought alot of fish with weighted Salt Shakers and Senko's at 8+ feet .. and in the eddy of the points to deeper water of 12+ feet.

Also -- If you are not snelling your 3/0 Gama Worm hooks as Bub shows on his YouTube vid ....... with using floro-- You should !!

Our hook-up/boating ratio went up BIG TIME using that knot with #17 Floro and 4.5 twist. Just Lubricate well and tighten first from the main line - then the tag as Bub's vid shows .. The point of the hook using 8" Salt Shakers and 6" Senko's will always be straight up on the hookset !!

It is a bish to get the old knot off the hook when you wish to re-tie that knot -- so also be prepared and carry a razor knife or lighter on-board with you as well to make old line faster/easier to remove.

FYI:

Instead of using the rubber pegs with tungsten baits I usually pull a couple strands off a jig skirt and with pull it through with a 6" piece of flouro. Those pegs are too big for most of my tungsten baits and this way is cheaper too.

Ash - That is a Carolina Rattle between the weight and the skirt.

Makes alot of noise.

Yes i do have punch skirts and I have more hooks coming in tomorrow. I have ordered tungsten weights from tru tungsten for over a month and have not received them, I heard they are having problems. I just located a new company back east and should have them within a week.
