August Stripers

Post by Riverdog13 »

I've been Black Bass fishing lately but I'm waiting to rip some lips on some top water stripers.

Rich I saw the pic you posted; sweet deal they looked happy.

Any pointers to when and where I might be able to start throwing top water for stripers? I was thinking Big Break.

I watched a you tube video with Rus Snyders throwing a Lunker Punker. Any thoughts on this bait? Is it worth the money or can I produce as many and as big a fish with the Spook? He launched out of Orwood when do Stripers get thick in that area?

Thanks,

River D

I've been watching the birds (Kerns) for the last couple of weeks. Each day their getting more active. Yesterday, the 5th we were actually BB fishing and we spotted shad activity off the back with the birds working....I immediateily picked up the lunker Punker and threw out their. About 6 cast later I connected. The topwater action lasted for about another 1/2 hour and within that time Cathy caught hers and about 5-6 dinks throwing a small swimbait.
FUN!

For the striper's in mass com'in in and shallow, Id give it another 2 weeks and it could be an all day senerio. The key too finding them is watch'in the birds (Kerns)

For Lunker Punkers for Stripers is must have...Start with a white one (either/or rattles) or your standard Delta Shiner....The Hook Line and Sinker has a good selection (6")

I wrote an article for Black Dog Baits, you can find it under my name on their website. Any questions just call me or if any one would like a guide trip starting on September 1st or just before depending on the striper activity call me at (925) 684-2064 and leave a message and I'll return your call.

Also, at TackleTour.com, Cal wrote an article on the Striper action just down the coast from SF....It all happened during the ICast in Florida. Best action in Ten Years...

Thank Rich for the reply,

My father in law who is a big BB fisherman told me in order to cut down the learning curve on the Delta you should hire a guide. So when this happens i'll definetly look you up; the money is just pretty tight right now.

I actually read that article before but didn't realize it was you until now. Great article!

So why so you recommend the 6" Jr. vs. the 9" Lunker Punker?

Is there another name for a Kern? i looked on google and could not locate one.

Thanks again,

I think he meant Tern...

They are the white diving birds you will see hover above the bait before they hit the water. A definite sign of bait activity and sometimes there are stripers involved too.

The six inch Lunker Punker is easier to throw all day. The stripers kill this bait...

The small ones are arctic terns and the larger terns with the orange bill are caspian terns.. If you see caspian terns circling an area hang around because they are the best fishing birds of them all and it seems they can see very deep in the water. my topwater trigger finger is starting to twitch. personally i like big magnum and super magnum spooks in green shad. looking for a 35 plus this year and i feel it....catch and release

Got into a couple around Mildred today fishing for LMB. We landed a 30", a 16" & lost a 22"-24" fish @ the boat. Also a few dinks.

Hmmmm, we almost went to Justin's water today. :D

Tuesday I had 30 fish before 1000 .... and wanted to get to 40 cookie cutters - but the bite turned off. Lost a Monster arond 0830- along with quite a distance of #65 braid... and a $45 swimbait to top it off.

DeltaJack was rip roaring and ready to go Wed morning when I woke him at 0520. (DeltaLuke is still sick bigtime currently) DeltaJack and I had almost 20 fish (Wind never let down yesterday/last-night/the night before.... and muddied it all up perdy dayum good)

We called it quits at 0940 to go in and have breakfast at Beef N' Brew. What a great way to cap off the morning with some Awesome ball tip's, eggs, hash taters, sour toast and a side of sausage gravey with some coffee and chocolate.

DeltaJack got the biggest fish today ! He was so stoked in telling/showing mom that !! Image

Image

Image

Image

After all the meat was filleted and cleaned up .... We gave all the meat to a close family that is in need of some blessings and protine. This is not was my first time in doing that ... and will never be my last for the schoolies around 8-12 pounds. -- Everything over #12- mabey #14 if my my pop's is with me .... get put back into the water when revived. (My pop's will keep any fish he can - and the bigger the better. )

And to be honest - DeltaJack was a little upset- as he was swimming with his friend when I gave it.

Striper Fillets - as always - a great reward that can be given to others in need ... and they always more that appreciate every bit of it !

The family and I last night all ended up at Round Table Pizza for the all you can eat Pizza/Salad/ .. and DeltaJack had all the Cinnamon Twist he could eat last night.

No offense as it's your right to whack the fish, but with the striper population at all time lows, not sure it's a great idea to kill fish if all you're going to do with them is give them away? I take a fish from time to time (generally just eat the occasional gill bleeder), but as a 30 year delta striper angler I know that the numbers of fish are way down. It's getting worse every year too. Just because some hot fishing can be had doesn't mean there are alot of fish around, they still school up thick, but there are way less schools!!!

James- Thanks for sincere question.

I understand where you are comming from. Heck- I already had filleted them and prepered a menu for them with what we had in the fridge/cup-boards...

The menu originally consisted of this .....
Cajun 2x dry flowered, Pan fried in olive oil to accompany some Cuscus, Steamed Broccoli/Carrots and mabey some Parsnips to accompany if I would of ran to Lucky's .... and then drizzles in EVOL and herbs. (Thanks again Mona !! :D ) that will be topped off with pesto saulted mushrooms, and a spring salad with champange dressing and feta cheese.

It sounds sort of like a lame menu- But my wife is gone till later this afternoon - and I don't feel like running to the store with the boat hooked up -- or having to unhook it ~ and then rehook it again for tommorow.

Call me lazy...... Image

Later that night we went to RT Pizza for the all you can eat after I gave the fillets to someone else that really appreciated them .. and their family to enjoy as it is not bought on the market for under $5 a pound - and most of all - They REALLY Loved them and used all the meat to the fullest.

I still have never once in my life eaten a LM Bass .... We can start a seperate post of Spoonies/Divers/Rings Vs. eating Teal/Pin's and Mallards post if you wish in the hunting forum. Truth of the matter- They all get eaten and enjoyed. It is in the law -- and it is call "Gifting".

~ Again .... WE HAD ALL INTENTIONS OF EATING THE FISH !! AND ~~ ANOTHER FAMILY IS IN GREATER NEED THAN OURSELVES CURRENTLY !!

Irreguardless of your thoughts - We ~ (DeltaJack and I) boated/enjoyed/cleaned.... and in the end -with some minor conflicts - We gave to others in more need than our own family.

~~ Weather the meat itself came out of my boys, wife or even my own Anus ~~ comared to another family with kids is really no matter to you at all. Image ......as it all in the end will end up at the Oakley Sainitary Distrct to be processed further resuming back into the Delta.

If you have a problem with that -- please feel free to PM your objections. Image

....... Otherwise -- You Can Go Pound Sand.

Cheers,
Dan

PS- I already did the Christmas BBQ where where everyone ate the Mallars/Teal and Pin ... and the MIL off of the same BBQ .... un-known to her ate the Bluebill ..... Or was it the Spooney ?? :?

No matter - It came out of her Anus "almost" the same.. The pride of watching her having to choke it down in every bite ~ while every one else was raving about it being better that prime rib .... That was the the Biggest reward among all rewards in itself !!

I am not asking for anyones hot spots, just what parts of the delta they seem to be showing up in. If I had the money I would hire a guide but im not loaded with money. any help would be great.

GSC,

The Pencil Popper, Spook, stuff that for years were known to catch stripers are all GOOD. Large small or medium all GOOD. Know do you want too talk about QUALITY....The above or the pits.....You will atleast buy 4-6 of any of the above to ONE Lunker Punker.

There $19.95 Injected molds, Costom Molds $35.00, Wood $59.00 Costom Wood 70.00.

Now for your mindset. Do you want to go after numbers or Quality. If you won't to go after NUMBERs> Throw any of the above. Do you want to go after Quality/Weight go with any of the Lunker Punkers. For a fact, Grant has on Video a 40# (Not released yet).

Justin and I both fish for Quality and not Numbers. I fish for Quality when Im with friend (20lbs and up), with a Client, the Client dictates what he want that session. Some want Quality, some just want numbers and fun.

Changing out hooks to Owners (Bigger the Better) O'rings etc are the norm. Modifying the color is the norm. inventing new colors or the norm.

The Lunker Punker will at the end of the (Most) days out fish anything in your boat that floats, wiggles, whatever. Proven fact within my boat.

For 19.95 in White/Chartruse tail you cant go wrong...Same has tak'in your wife/girlfriend/ms out to Roundtable for a pizza.

Rich
Ps> With/without rattles is down to what the fish want or sometimes just your mindset toward either. Both will catch fish.

Franks track and surrounding areas is either dead or very little activity....Like Justin, Im waiting for the cooler morning and see what the next full moon will do. Currently I have just 3-4 opening left for September. Now into October and November.

Water way out west is still 67.2 on avg from last Friday. Tommorow morning we will be having another BIG incoming tidal push of cooler water in the morning..turnning to the outgo.

Thursday evening before the last two hours- and after the change at dusk could really produce with Big Hammers, Under-Spins in Cart/White with Hyper-Strper tails and keep tossing a suspending rip bait like a LC Staycee in shad or an LC Flashminnow in white if fishing shallower depths.

As far as top-water has been for myself for the start of this new season - The Pencile Popper in trout and MS Slammer in purple/white have been the best for me. I have an all White LP and a Delta Shiner LPunker 6" wood. They have not been there on my end as of yet -- But they will come !!

Best tip - Don't look at the water temp ... Just the dew on your your boat and it's seats when you get up at 0500 to see if you are gona fish the top of the water collum, middle or deep before 1000 along with what the tides are doing for your location that you will be fishing.... and adjust accordingly.

Oops... Almost gave away too much info... For some reason they're not hitting chrome/blue like they have in years past... What's worse is they seem to be pickier in bait selection... Been hitting a lot on Chartruese Shad Lucky Craft Lipless baits... I tried to buy Gene out of them at the Hook but ran out of money... Expensive for striper bait but whatever works!!!

I'm a jiggin spoon freek for delta stripers and have caught 1000's of stripers on them in the last 15 years. Last year was very different.....the fall run..I maybe caught 7 fish on spoons. I fished the same areas that have always been reliable for jigging but last year the jig bite was basically non existant for me. I had a good year anyway mostly on topwater stuff but I still wonder why I couldn't get them on spoons. Overall I know the water temps have been up abit....actually up about 6 degrees and maybe that's why..Just wondering if anyone else noticed the same thing. See you out there..look for bait..look for birds.. catch and release
