The 2009 WON BASS U.S. Open is shaping up nicely with a quality field of anglers that has already surpassed last year’s numbers and is continuing to grow. Great news Hutch. Mead has better this year with higher weights than we've seen in years. Talked with Rick Grover yesterday and he is planning on fishing. Nothing else going on, hopefully everyone comes out to play. Should be good.

The beauty of the US Open is that anyone can win it. I would love to see a new face win it and get all the glory.

Should be a great turnout. There is a buzz around this tournament which is great.

We are currently heavy by 17 non-boaters, but as pros sign up on the last few days, this number gets eaten up real quick. If you are a non boater and want to get in, I would strongly recommend finding a pro to sign up with.

I am surprised that no non-boater has yet to jump on this forum and look for a pro? I know that there are some guys that would likely snap you up to guarantee thier spot.

you really can't pick accurrately. That lake really levels the playing field and the look at all those names.. any one of them can put together a win. A bunch of studs in that line up.

Good fishing to all and I hope everyone makes it to the weigh in in one piece.

The best thing about Mead

Post by Rick G »

is the Lake is very humbling. Hard to pattern at times and the pressure of lots of boats really evens the field at times. Lots of times the standard finesse tactics used in our beat up lakes work well there. Those school fish in the summer months move all the time and are very hard to pattern. The 'X' factor coming into play are the larger amount of smallmouth in the lake, which IMHO will be 40% of the fish weighed this year. Still a fun and well run event and if I can do it so can you. Sign up folks, Rick G.

with me taking 10 days off for clear lake and another 10 days off for havasu coming up I really can't. If I could pull one more string right now I would trust me, Unc's taught me a lot about that place. I agree with you though, if people can do it they should do it. The poker game alone would be worth it.

Im not in Won or ABA TOC's. Only NBW. It was either 10 days on Mead or Clear Lake. I picked Clear lake. When I do the open it wont be from back of the boat, so its going to be a while before I sit at the big kids table.

Really looking forward to fishing as a back-seater in the US Open this year. Last year I got two days of prefishing in but had to withdraw due to a death in the family. The chance to fish with and contribute with some of the top fishermen from the west and beyond is worth the price of admission. Like any other "regional" event (El Cajon Ford San Diego Team Open, ABA, WON or NBW fish-offs) you have to plan ahead with finances and time, to be competitive.

The US Open is just too rich in tradition to pass up. RG is on target. With the level of the lake where it is today (12 feet down from Last year), the playing field is really leveled for us fishermen who are not "locals". Good prefishing will be the key. I've already heard from a couple of the known "locals" conditions are tough and there are a lot of small fish. Imagine catching small fish and not having to travel all the way to Pittsburgh to do so.

Just think how much fun it will be to be with all the pros and the back-seaters on Sunday's press and sponsor's showcase day. Life is just too short...you've got to pick these babies off the tree because who knows what tomorrow holds.

Rod & Reel Radio will be broadcasting live from the Sunset Station Sunday starting at 6pm on Sunday, August 31st. We'll work hard to get the fishermen on the air you want to hear from. Join Big Tuna Bill, Stan, Wendy and myself on Sunday evening with all the updated information. Last Sunday you heard from Hutch, on the 31st well find out just what the participant think.

See you there...

I've been pre-fishing like a man on a mission lately. Even though the water level is down, the bite is still there. I'm feeling more and more confident on Mead daily. Fishing as a AAA, I'm determined to make a solid contribution. Can't wait!

Pro's, if you're on the fence, you need to pull the trigger.

RG - had a couple things serviced on the boat last weekend.....tow'd it all the way from Vegas. Dan was the man taking care of me. I was in and out, wish I could've bounced in and said hello. See you at the Open.

My pick on the Co side is my uncle John Krumsiek. The guy is a machine at Mead. I think he has been in the top 5 in every major derby out there in the last few years. He is going into this one with a ton of confidence too. Hopefully he gets some good pairings and the pros listen to what he has to say. The man has a ton of knowledge to offer about mead.

The best thing about going to Mead

Post by JJCJR »

OK I've finally culled my shop (tackle bag) down to the best 10,000 lures to take to the U.S. Open ...and those are just the soft plastics.

How the heck am I going to get all this stuff to Lake Mead? Worst yet, how do I decide what to use? You know I'm going to forget the one thing that works!

Hope you all are having the same sort of problems.

See you at the Sunset Station, on the water or in the Madrid Room.

For those of you not going with us, listen to Rod & Reel Radio Sunday evening 6pm August 30th (am540 or am1260). Big Tuna Bill and I will be broadcasting from the Sunset Station during the partners' draw. Hopefully we'll be able to get on air some of the folks you want to hear from.

Hutch made the right choice and moved it back to Sunset Station... we had a horrible experience last year at Silverton all around. Sunset is much more conducive all the way around for the Open venue! Sure wish I was going to be able to make it this year, but it is not in the cards.
