Does anyone on here know St. Croix Rods in and out?

Post by TDawg »

I want to talk to someone who knows St. Croix Rods in and out. I want to know what the major differences are between the St. Croix Legend Extreme Rods and the Legend Tournament Bass Rods.

What I am really trying to find out is if the Legend Extreme Rods are Legend Tournament Bass Rods with different wrapping and a higher price.

Good Fishing,

The Legend Extreme rods use SCv graphite, while the LTB rods use SCiv graphite. The St Croix website has some good info about the differences in their graphite strains:

You should go check out the rods in person and see what you think...there are also a couple of St Croix Pro Staffer's that visit Western Bass. I am sure they can help you out and get you hooked up with the right rods.

Bottom line is they are both great rods and you won't go wrong with either of them! 8)

Hope that helps!

I won a St Croix spinning rod in a club raffle - it is a 6'6" Medium action rod - I would have preferred 7' but the sensativity on this rod is incredible. I have a Loomis GL-3 and a fenwick and this rod beats both of them in terms of sensativity hands down. Its not the highest end rod that St. Croix makes, but very good value (it was free!)

If you look at a St.Croix rod some where on it,s label will be a trademark number like SC III. The numbers go from SC II to SC V. The higher the number the higher the modulus, higher the cost, more sensitivity, the lighter the rod, and the more breakable it is. St.Croix makes some of the best blanks in the business. The problem with St.Croix for rod builders is their Warranty. The warranty is good but You have to send the broken rod to me ($20) I send it to St.Croix ($20) they will charge me $20 to $60 for the replacement blank and shipping, I build the new rod and charge you about $25 for new cork and reel seat, I will then ship the new rod to you $20.00. Thats a minimum of $105 to get the rod warrantied. I have not made a CENT and it has cost you $$$$. Thats not too bad if it was a $400 rod but if it was a $150 rod that sucks.

I bought a used Loomis once. It ended up snapping on me when I was freeing a jig. I didn't realize how brittle they were at the time.
Anyways I sent it in to get it replaced and they shipped me back a blank. I called them up and they told me the rod was custom made.
I ended up selling the blank for $80 since I figured I would eventually snap it again. Incredible rod but brittle.

Tdawg;

Im not sponsored or a rep but i think i do know the St Croix rod series better than some of those reps they have working the trade shows. I know because its all i use. The answer to your question is absolutly without a shaddow of a doubt..... NO! They are not the same blanks just wrapped rods with a different name, color and higher price line.

I happen to own a complete set of Legend Tournament series. I still have some St Croix Avid series rods that i just couldnt bear to part with. When you pick up a rod from the rack in any tackle store you always try and picture what the sensitivity would feel like and test the parabolic wobble in the rod. Let me tell you there is no describing what thses rods feel like when you feel that super light florocarbon tick pick up and then the "thump" as you set the hook! Un-describable.

The Legend Xtreme is a higher class above the Legend Elite series rods. I have fished one recently in my favorite model 68MXF 8-14lb with one of my rep buddies from my bass club and Yes, they are more sensitive and lighter than the Elite or Tournament series rods. I actually tried setting the hook on some rock indentations and bumps. If you ask me the amount of sensitivity between insane(tournament) and ludicruss(xtreme) is not as much as the difference in price. For the most part the difference you feel the best is the weight difference.

If i needed to choose a line of rods i would buy them but since i have a set Legend Tournaments and an Elite rod i woud not reccommend making the investment unless of course you can write them off on your taxes or if money doesnt matter:D !

Thats the crumby part about custom rods...you break it and you only get a blank back. For most higher end manufacturers nowadays, you break the rod and for $30-$50 bucks you have a new stick from your retailer.

I sold it here on the forum and it wouldn't surprise me if you ended up building the rod for him.
There's nothing like a custom made rod but I didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with it breaking.
When I first fished with that custom Loomis I was setting the hook on everything and i'm not the type that does that. It was totally a night and day difference from my old rods.

Thanks everyone for the info. You all have given me a lot to consider.

I have a St. Croix Avid series rod and I absolutely love it. It is the most sensitive rod that I own. I have been looking for quite sometime at new rods as I am want to start upgrading my equipment and take my tournament fishing to the next level. I currently have a smattering of various rods and manufactures and its very frustrating to have different sensitivity levels from one rod to another. My plan is to go with all one rod manufacture and one series so that all my rods are the same in sensitivity levels. Know I know that sensitivity levels vary depending on rod length and stiffness, so no worries.

Beach, I used to be in your bass club when I lived in Redding and let me tell you that you build some awesome rods. I stood on the back of your boat and fished a few of your really high-end rods and they were unbelievable. You and and I will talk soon as to what you might be able to do for me.

I just wanted to keep all my options open as far as off the shelf rods too.

Good fishing,

If you even like the Avid line a little bit you will LOVE the Legend Tournament series. No comparison and IMHO the best there is!
