Lake Oroville

Post by oregonbassman »

I'll be visiting the in-laws in a couple weeks and would like to get away and do some local fishing.

How is the lake for fishing nowadays? Is there any bank access (no boat) to chuck some swimbaits?

Oh this is going to be a "HOT" thread for sure...

Hopefully, your in-Laws don't live on a houseboat in Bidwell Canyon. The state wants to kick them off at their expense to "Upgrade" the marina (even though our state is broke).

As for the fishing, the lake is at an all-time low, and going lower each day. You'll have to walk about a mile to get to the water. Plenty of banks to walk, but you would be better off just leaving your swimbaits at home. Just fished a tourney there on Saturday. I wouldn't bring anything larger than 4" baits. You may get lucky with a topwater bite in the early A.M. As a matter of fact, the fishing is probably a lot better where you are. I would not recommend fishing "Horrorville" at this time.

Don't listen to drakzz or what ever his name is. Oroville is fine any fishing is fun. I wish my friends had a houseboat on oroville. If your into swimbaits you can try we caught 3 on wake style swimbaits up 11:00am they ranged from 1.5 to 2.25lbs but if you want numbers go with samll plastics anything tubes, senkos, darterheads. Good luck and have fun

dearmound, or whatever your name is, don't even start with me. I gave the guy some legit information. If you caught 1.5's to 2.25's, consider yourself EXTREMELY lucky. Winning weight for the tourney was 10 + pounds. Everyone knows the fish are DEEP. For you to encourage someone in Oregon to fish Ororville to catch 3 wakebaiit fish is insane, not to mention expensive. I can think of better water to fish during our drought.

P.S. - Learn how to read and spell instead of giving people erroneous information. By the way, what exactly is a samll plastic?

Another reason drrakruz is giving out bogus info, Oroville is CURRENTLY 40 ft. higher than the lowest point last year. It is dropping, but the release rate has slowed in recent days and now instead of 2 ft. per day it is down to a little over 1 ft. a day. The new ramp at Bidwell will be out of the water soon and usable, but the ramp at Bidwell has a new asphalt parking lot and the lake will be very fishable for the next few weeks.

I will say that you need to stay away from the swimbaits if you're looking to get bit as plastics will get you alot more bites. Bank access is tough, but you can get around to some really good fishing right around the Spillway ramp and the rockpiles that are near there.

Good luck and get a few!!!!

Scott,

Just how is it you arrived at the conclusion that I gave out "bogus info"? Have you personally fished Oroville lately? Fished the WRL with G Sunday. Bite was at best, pathetic. Ran into Brambo from your "Lounge" last week and he even said the bite was the pits. What is the problem here? I believe the info I gave relating to the bite was accurate.

I said small plastics: tubes, senkos, dartheads everyone that fishes Oroville knows that ever bait I listed works on Oroville, all year. Plus oregonbassman said he likes to through swimbaits, let him toss a swimbait out, like I said we caught 2 or 3 not giants but early in the am they took it. Then we went to small plastics. Plus every fish on Oroville is not deep it fishes just like Shasta you can catch fish on top first part of the morning.

hey guys,
WHy attack people when they make a suggestion? just cause you can't catch them that way...

Actually, sticking with a small (6" wood Wake bait) and spook on the shaded walls is starting to draw a quality strike or two (still not a good bank access). The trick very slow and with purpose, this wll improve as the evening temperatures cool further and further.

And Yeppers the small plastics are the key for any sort of numbers. There is also a crank bite at times but with triple digits forecasted the end on the week plastics will again be king..

Thanks for getting my name right this time.

Interesting. That sounds exactly what I stated in my first post. I guess it takes a few readings for some people to penetrate their egos.

Wow I cant belive how upset people get! ha And the fishing at Oroville is not on fire you do have to work for them, I was up there last weekend and both days this weekend, saturday I fished the wrl by myself and caught proly 15 or so fish, best 5 went 8.71, got the numbers of fish on dart heading 7" robo worms any green color for the most part and my bigger fish were on crank baits off main body points. Sunday I took out a guy from work and his 2 young boys fished from 10:30-3:30 and caught 12 biggest was 2 1/4 lbs, all fish came on robo worms 6"-7" and tubes in 5'-30' of water. The fish are not every where you have to find the right type of banks to fish! But as for you trying to fish from the bank its going to be hard I would recomend walking to the end of every point and throwing a crank bait and then working it with a dart head! Good luck!!

Quit bitching like a bunch of little school girls over the internet.. It's like the special elympics.. even if you win your still retarded.. GET OVER IT.

I have had luck with dartheads,Norman Crankbaits, And drop shotting roboworms.. If you would like you could try out the afterbay.. There is a bank lined with nothing but rock the I think you could have acess too. It is hit and miss when I fish there tho. But I do good with jigs, Frogs and cranks.

After I read your message, I was like man, this guy is going to have a blast:

Houseboat; fishing; Lake Oroville; birthday party, and swimbaits. You can't go wrong that sounds fun weather you catch a swimbait fish or not. But after reading drrakruz thread, he was to negative. Like Gary D. always says; fish what you have confidence in. If it's swimbaits or small plastics go for it.

Look at swimbaits I know some FLW guys that have been catching swimbait fish on both Shasta and Oroville for the last few weeks, good ones. Thats the bait they have confidence in and they catch them all the time.

oregonbassman,

You didn’t start a pissing match. Some guys just get their rocks off by posting anything that doesn’t agree with their mentality. Additionally, it makes them feel better about themselves. This site is supposed to be informative for all. Apparently, some people think I’m negative because I gave you firsthand information about what I experienced this weekend during an 80+ boat tournament. You can take that with a grain of salt.

Here’s another example of why people post only on topics they can get their rocks off—It’s because they’re insecure about the unknown. Wally here posts a thread looking for some help regarding a surge brake issue he’s dealing with:

http://westernbass.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52091&f=2

I politely give him a great resource for his surge brake issue, and he replies with a humble, “Thank youâ€

If that’s not the epitome of negativity and insecurity, I don’t know what is.

So your saying I am insecure because I made a special olympics joke... Good job DR. Phill.....

You forgot "negativity", and the name is Dr. Rakruz. Did I forget to mention "Name Calling" is also a sign of insecurity and anger? Go ahead and continue to feed. You might want to start your own website while you're at it.

Hey Oregonbassman,

Here is a better suggestion for you. There is another lake next to oroville called collins lake. It is alot easier to walk around and it is an amazing swimbait lake. It's a small lake and you can rent a little boat there if you want to. Plus there are tons of 10lb+ bass in there that are caught on a regular basis. With an equal amount of spotted bass and largemouth it would be your best choice. oroville is not a very good lake to be a bank fisherman.

I agree with Phil. Collins Lake is not real low like most other lakes and would be much better to fish from shore. I'm not too sure of ten pounders being caught on a REGULAR basis but it does kick out a few a year and they are in there. Has a nice beach for the kids to swim at and a general store etc. Good Luck

Haha, 10lbers are not a regularity out there..
But I do agree, collins would be a good bet if you wanted to throw a swimbait. But hay, i would throw the swimbait at oroville just for kicks

I second Collins lake.. But, It is pricey these days.. And a lot of boat traffice. Making it very muddy and lots of waves for the shore fisherman.

See what you started; your info wasn't that far off as far as lake Oroville goes. But, as I said fish what you have the most confidence in. I'm ok with swimbaits, but my buddies are doing really well . Pick -up a swimbait and try it you may catch better fish then your use to.

FYI: I would love my co-angler to through swimbaits all day, I could careless if that was the hot bite or not but you never know he may get the KICK
