Spawn Patterns

Post by Jonnysig »

Hey,

Got another "new to Northern Cali bass fishing" question. Like I said, I was stationed in Florida and had that spawning pattern down. Is it the same here in California?? Believe it or not where i was in Florida it got below freezing and took its toll on the spawning season. I keep hearing it will stay relatively warm around here year round. Just wondering if it will affect the months or water temp or even activity of the spawn season??? Pretty much what Im getting at is when do these Cali bass spawn??

Thanks alot!

It depends on the lake. Usually March through June is the primary spawning season with the peaks in April and May.

You can still find some on beds, even now..Albeit they will be few and far between and probably not be all that large..Dewayne is pretty much spot on for the major spawning activity..It is possible the San Diego area lakes might start their spawning periods as early as February..

anytime the water temp is consistantly between low 60's to low 70's mixed with a lunar cycle.

Jonnysig,

I moved up here for four years ago and I still dont know when these damn fish spawn. Guys say from March - June - but it is really temperature oriented. I have seen some fish up as early as the last week of Feb and out as late as August..... The key is to find the winter time fish, follow them up to thier pre-spawn habitats and fish those fish - and when the water temps hit into 68 for a length of time or is into the 60's during a full\new moon cycle check the banks with the TM on high.

I have had my best success just focusing on the pre-spawners -as Mother Nature seems to F-with me when I am out on the water during the spawn.

Ash and Dewayne pretty much hit the time slot....For DD start has early as Jan 15th, most DD will start around Feb 15 too March 15th. Look for a period of warm days (3-5) just before a full moon and during.

Good luck.

The spawn, the period bass move up on beds, starts when the water temperature warms and becomes stable at 62 degrees at the depth the bass are spawn; 1' to 20'. There are always exceptions; lake levels changes are primary concerns.
Weather conditions are not as dramatic in CA as in FL, due to most lakes are deep clear water reserviors, with the exception of the CA delta.
Bass can move up as early as Jan or as late as May, depending on the water temperatures and altitude. General times are March to April, during the first full moon phase and continue for about 2 full moon cycles on most reserviors.
