Dropshot Rig Question
Dropshot Rig Question
Been reading up and trying to master dropshotting and have had issues with keeping my hook straight and facing upward. I read somewhere that you could also dropshot w/ your hook facing down and get a decent hook up in the lower lip. Doesnt seem right to me at all. Seems like it would just pull out of the fish's mouth on the set. So 2 questions.... hook facing down?? and some help w/ the palomer knot/drop shot rig?? 8 out of 10 times I get it right. With my first tourny coming up I want 10 out of 10 if you know what i mean...
Thanks guys! Tight lines

Re: Dropshot Rig Question
for hook up...
Tie the palomar them hold hook upright and run tag end of line through hook eye from the top down then add your weight...
seems like after a few fish or one decent one it gets crooked no matter what so I just retie..

Re: Dropshot Rig Question
hook point up...nose hook the bait.....#1 Gama drop shot/split shot hook. +1 Palomar tied with hook point up then tag through one more time point side.

Re: Dropshot Rig Question
When holding the hook, face the hook point away from you and insert the line through the eye so it comes out the eye towards the hook point. Next pull the line through the hook eye the distance you need and return the end of the line back through the hook eye so it comes out the opposite way and finish making the loop to complete the Palomar knot. The hook should be upright, if not run the end of the line through the top of hook eye as suggested to turn it over.

Re: Dropshot Rig Question
When I tie a dropshot rig, I start with the hook pointing up.
I run the line the line from bottom to top, and then go back through top to bottom so that my loop is above the hook, and the remainder of the line is below.
I tie my palomar knot.
After tying, I take the tag in and pass it one more time top to bottom through the eye. This pulls the knot into the eye to help protect it and also helps to keep the hook point up.
I switch between nose-hooking, jig-hooking, and wacky-rigging until the fish show a preference.
Good luck in your tournament.

+1 This is how I do mine as well.. sometimes you have to play with the knot a little to get it straight... not much different than other baits if you think about it...Kodiak wrote:When I tie a dropshot rig, I start with the hook pointing up.

Re: Dropshot Rig Question
1. fish with the hook up please, while it might be possible to still catch a fish as the hook is still in the fishes mouth, I would be worried that a gullet or les sthan ideal hook up might harm a fish that could be released.
2. If you have trouble with the palomar, you can use a hook called a standout.....you still tie the same knot on a bight in the hook, but then the tag end passes through the eye forcing the hook into proper position every time.
3. A superior hook at gamagatsu drop shot/spilt shot hook does require a proper knot. You tube has videos to show you the correct method, and previous posts have covered it.

Re: Dropshot Rig Question
I am probably the only one that uses those stand off hooks. I like them allot, hooks them all right on the top of the mouth. I know allot of people turn there nose up at them, but they work better than anything else I have tried.

Re: Dropshot Rig Question
I used to use the standout hooks alot, and frankly I don't know why I don't use them anymore.....
What you can also do is snell the dropshot hook and then take the tag end of the line and just run it thru the eye again to have everything rigged straight up and down.
Just a couple of cents for ya,
