Powell Rods--How do they match up???

Post by birdi23nls »

Ok, a follow up on my last thread i started about what rods for the delta. I found that if you ask specific questions you usually get better answers, so here it is. I am getting ready to by a flipping/pitching rod for the delta. I want a Revo stx reel....i like them and they are cheap right now so I have my mind made up on that. The rod is a different matter.

I'm looking at 7'6" rods rated for up to 1oz or 1 1/2 oz. I've narrowed it down to:

Powell 765
Dobyns 765 flip
Kistler Helium II 7'6"

I want the powell because it is cheap, I want the dobyns because it is so light and balances well in your hand, and I want the Kistler becasue i think it looks bad and I don't have one.

Are Powells basically as good of a rod as the others only cheaper in price? Brand name dosn't matter to me if is is still a good rod. If the other rods are better quailty...why? are the blanks more sensitive, extremely light, etc?

The short of it is yes. Powell rods were almost 200.00 for a long time. They dropped the price not long ago. They are great rods. Light split grip, great warranty, good return warranty price. Dont let the price fool ya.

The answer is that anyone on the Dobyns prostaff will tell you they are better, Powell prostaff will tell you they are better ad Kistler prostaff will tell you they are better.

Well, in light of the last post, the only sponsor I have is my retirement fund

OK ... I've own both the powell 766 and the Dobyns 766. The Helium II, I had considered. But decided that due to their inconsistent quality, I'd rather not spend that kind of $$$ on.

That said, the Powell rods are good rods and right now at a great price. The problem I have with them is that they tend to be MUCH TOO TIP HEAVY. If you were to flip all day with them, it would feel like you've lifted weights all day. Frankly, I could not flip all day with the Powell 766. I tried to counter balance it with the BPS balancer, but it required two of those one ounce lead weights and that ended up making the rod much to heavy.

The new G2 Dobyn's rods are really nice. The thing I don't like is the price that they have for the G2. I know, I know ... MUCH better blanks, etc, etc ... but at $240/copy ... it's getting into some very select company. This Dobyn's 766 is an excellent rod. Feels very well balanced and I can fish with it all day w/o having to feel like I lifted weights all day. Though I still use on of the BPS balancers on the butt end of the rod to balance it out more, on this rod, no weight was required, just the rubber boot.

My recommendation is if you can find a G1 version of the Dobyn's rod, buy that instead at more than 1/2 the price of the new one. Then again, as compared to the Helium II, it's a bargain!!

Powell rods are great for the price, But if cost isnt that much of an issue get the Dobyns. I don't have any dobyns rods yet because of the price, I do have 7 powells though and I like every one of them very much. For the price you cant beat a powell, they'r put together very well, use quality components and have a good look. I want to get one more powell, the 754cb glass( I love powells glass rods), after that I'll be going up a notch to phenix or dobyns rods.

Powell rods are goods rods. And for the price cant be beat. But I like Dobyns WAY more, yet they are expensive. If money is not an issue go with the Dobyns. If you dont want to spend a lot get a powell. Powells are good rods still.

Dobyns, enough said!! Powell's are just too tip heavy. If you can't afford a Dobyns then by all mean get a powell.

Each one of the rods you listed has its positives and its negatives..If possible try them all and see which you like the best..As everyone has said if money is tight, go with the Powell..

I've seen the Dobyn's and Powell. I think ultimately either will make you happy. Keep in mind even cheap rods catch fish. The advantage of more expensive rods is usuallly sensitivity, or specialized blanks for ridgid hooksets or soft tips. These are just improvements.

I own the Dobyn's 704 cb glass and 807 mag.

I also own 3 ST. Croix rods, 1 lamiglas, 2 Falcons, 2 ugly sticks and a priemer.

Don't overlook some of the Bass Pro rods that are in the specs range you're looking for. If brand names/status don't matter to you, you can get a great stick for a reasonable price.

Great posts, all have made great and true points. If you want to try a 765 powell let me know, I am fishing Oroville for the next month and will not be needing it, just shoot me a pm and we can set it up. I use Curados and love the rod not only for flippin, but also with frogs and 1/2 - 3/4 oz basstrix   . It is slightly heavier on the tip side than the Dobyns. Keith has exceptional customer service and a lifetime warranty ($35-$45 I think).Good luck, Jason

Jared,
Good call on the used dobyn's 765......u beat me to the punch dude.......congrats !!!! ( I was hoping you would see it in the classifieds ! )

I just purchased two "almost new" ( literally three weeks old ! the guy bought them august 13th ) Dobyn's rods......a 705 and a 684 crank. Got one heck of a deal on them so I am quite happy ! :D :D :D I should receive them early part of next week, so maybe if you can get that deer out of the way we can go break in our " new" rods together !!! ( how in the world do u go hunting when it's 100 degrees out ? ) Oh and by the way......found a cheap way to keep treble hooks out of seats !!! :) ( u know.....other than being careful ! )

HOW DO YOU FIND A BAD ROD THESE DAYS I QUESTION; COMPARED TO THE 80'S 90'S ! DOBYNS, POWELL, FENWICK, CUSTOM MADE RODS, EXTREMES, I THINK THEY ALL ARE GOOD AND SURELY BETTER THAN THE OLDER DAYS. ITS JUST COME DOWN TO PERSONAL PREFFERENCE I GUESS ??

For 1 ounce and 1.5 flipping and punching I would take a look at the powell 766. I am not sponsored by them so I will shoot straight. I have 3 of them in the 766 one with braid, flouro, and mono. Great delta rod for flippin, punchin and heavy top water.
