Swimbaits on the Delta, A little Help?

Post by Dom »

Ok I got this punching thing down now since JustinD gave me a woopin with that big fish on Saturday(congrats Justin :D ) I guess its time to learn this swimbait thing. I Just stopped in at the Hook this morning on my way to make a delivery and picked up some white 6" big hammers and the 6" red and black big hammers I also purchased some 3/4 oz heads.

So my question is, do I just throw it out and slow roll it back to the boat? on low tide do I work the out side weed line and on High work the bank out? are yall rippin em threw the deep weeds like we do lipless cranks? Do yall bounce em on the bottom or kill it? Also is this a productive tech spring threw fall? Winter? Also I plan on throwing them on 50lb power pro braid is mono better?

A little help would be great you can even PM if ya want

Thanks in advance :D :D :D :D

Don't throw them at all.....they don't work!!! Especially if you want to catch any size. I would return them immediately and invest in say.......the "Banjo Minnow"!!

You can do all the above that you mentioned with these baits. You will enjoy throwing them and should catch your fair share of good fish....enjoy!

Throw the shellcracker around weed clumps and just twitch it.
Throw the tournament talon osprey around rip-rap and docks.

Well, the advantage of a 3/4 oz bullet jig and 6" swimbait would be variable depth control. In-fishermen has an article on this every issue. So while I don't think of it like a spinnerbait, a Countdown rapala or lipless crankbait act alot like this set up.

you can countdown this set up to fish every level.

Dom,

I did fairly well last year starting around October and through February throwing the swimbait on the river, havent really been out much since then nor have I picked it up much.

I started using a 6" Optimum and a 7" Big Hammer on a 3/4oz head, as stated before throw them where you would a spinnerbait. Right up against the sparse tulles kinda deflecting off of them, in between the tulle islands, and across the grass flats.

Levy walls with grass were pretty good for me as well I could burn it back or yo yo it like a trap come out deeper to that 12' ledge toss it out there let it hit the bottom and keep it right on the break. For me it was one of those baits I just had to pick up whenever I felt the urge to fish another reaction bait to see how and where it would come into play. I was burned on it a few times, but all in all I felt like a learned a lot by taking this approach. It is the same approach I used when learning to fish the Slammer, anytime I wanted to pick up a topwater I picked up the slammer first - then my "go to bait" then back to the slammer.

Good luck my friend, the best part about fishing for me is learning new techniques to get the fish to go, I know that this is OLD HAT for many of these Delta Rats out there, but I hope it helps you in your quest.

Hey Dom,

The paddle tails are purty simple really. I use the 3/4oz heads on those 6.5" baits and the 1/2oz heads on the 5 & 5.5" baits. It's realy just a chuck and wind kinda deal. The cool deal is with the paddle tails, ya can indeed toss em anywhere and I have actually replaced my spinnerbaits and crankbaits tactics now using these paddle tails daily.

As with any bait out there, yer gonna find periods where it's off the hook, they are on specific patterns, as well as times when they just won't touch em. I have found the past three years, they start turning on in the late summer and will be very productive up to and thru April. I haven't done near as well on the River with the reds and orange crw patterns, as much as I have the whites/chratruese, blue shads, bait fish and baby bass looking patterns.

Right now with the shad getting bigger and all those shiners swimming thru the grass beds, they are startin ta turn on! Yer also not gonna be able ta keep the stripers off of em either, especially in the coming months! Good luck with em and if'n ya got any further questions in regards to those Big Hammers, feel free ta shoot me a PM!
