Anyone throw topwater baits on flouro without issues?

I have been reading about how most of the pros use old-school mono for surface baits because it doesn't sink. Have any of you gotten away with using flourocarbon line for topwater fishing without any real problems?

you might be able to use fluro with spinnerbaits, buzzbaits or wake baits but walking baits like the spook or poppers will absolutely need mono.

I am using Floro for Sub-Surface/Surface baits...On Slammers, BD's Go-2-Minnows and AC Plugs for the most part. Off the top of my head .... I only have Mono on some Sturegon rods and some older rods for Salmon.

I switch out my reals to rods quite often. I personally have no use for Mono as I am all Floro or Braid.

The last 25' +/- up to the boat ....... Just slow the bait to a stall to refloat it with a couple of twitches to give it some movement like a crip. Remember that you can pitch your bait as well to pockets - just like you are fishing a Jig/Crank/Paddle tail/Frog ect..

Slow down your retrieve while holding the rod tip up high to get that clacking noise that you wish to hear for yourself on the surface .... And you will get the best of both worlds if you are still in the Strike Zone ~ as long as the fish are there ~ and they are eating what you are presenting to them.

Just looking at my notes from the past, John Kerr of Ramona won the US Open with a Super Spook and fluoro earlier in the decade. He works the big bait pretty fast, but continues to fish the stuff with no problem we can see....

When I go out on a friend's boat I only bring one rod most of the time and the reel is usually spooled with fluorocarbon. I've been tossing 100 and 115 Sammys along with small poppers like the Splash-it on 8 lb. fluorocarbon without a difference. The baits walk and pop just fine, the fish still hit.

Sure you can get away with using flouro, but it's definitely not the right tool for the job. A floating line like Braid or mono will not negatively effect the action of the bait. Trust me I have tried throwing spooks with flouro, it was the only rod I had with me at the time, it does not work as good. You can't just stop the bait and let it sit or the flouro sinks and pulls the nose of the bait down. Unless you plan on working the bait fast and never stopping it, don't use flouro.

Chad "the Iceman"Griffin is a good friend of mine and after the onieda event i asked, "why fluoro?" He told me Its all he had as he was prepared to flip and punch grass. He stumbled onto smallies in the grass while he was lookin for largemouth flippin the grass. He tied the popper on and had to keep it moving to get them to commit. If he stopped it they would shy away. So the fluoro really wasnt a problem in his situation. It wasnt broke so he didnt fix it. Typically when throwing topwaters braid or mono will allow you to fish more versatile as far as retrieves go. In the Icemans case it didnt matter. If you want versatility with retrieves go with braid or mono all the time. You can get away with fluoro but you will sacrfice retrieve options. Hope this helps and good luck!

I'm trying to limit the number of rods I have to bring when I do get out on the water. I'd prefer to use flouro for just about everything else, so if I can get away with one rod, it's a lot easier.

I have used it on spooks and poppers in a pinch. I would rather not though.
you will get a different pop with a popper.

On lakes like Oroville (small fish lakes) I will throw poppers and small spooks on florocarbon, usually something like 12 lb. I tried once throwing a spook on heavy floro, it was a super frustrating presentation, like a previouse post stated you can do it if you walk it fast but when you pause and start it wants to plug. I have used heavy stuff on heavier baits like AC Minnow or a Shell Cracker without any problems.

just stick with mono or braid but if you really want to used flouro, rub wax on your line, a foot or soo

Flouro doesnt float, so it tends to pull bait down on long casts. Mono stays on top of the water much better so it makes working most topwaters much easier. Buzzbaits can be ran much slower on mono. Anything that runs under flouro if water clarity is an issue, if not braid.

I tried to use flouro with my Rico's but had to switch back to 12# mono. Much better for me. FWIW

Chapstick also works to keep the line up.

Chapstick....what a great idea. It must waterproof the line to stop it from absorbing water.
